Description POSITION: General Dentist, On-Call DEPARTMENT: Dental REPORTS TO: Dental Director LOCATION: Native American Health Center, Inc. (NAHC) 2950 International Blvd. Oakland, CA 94601 160 Capp Street San Francisco, CA 94110 WORK HOURS: On-Call, up to 30 hours per week, 75% FTE STATUS: Non-Union, Non-Exempt POSITION SUMMARY The General Dentist On-Call (GD-OC) is a key member of the dental team who substitutes for other Dentists when they are out of the office. Duties and responsibilities are to occur on the day(s) one is called in for work. All duties may or may not be possible to start and/or be completed given the length of call-assignment. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES All duties should be performed with excellence, high integrity and in accordance with the Dental Practice Act of California. Clinical Responsibilities Provide high quality dental services to NAHC’s beneficiary population, including preventive health screenings, and oral health education. Adhere to dental visit model of NAHC; be proactive and constructive in teaching DA’s, see members on time and communicate barriers with supervisors. Read and accurately interpret dental radiographs in a manner that ensures member, and/or parent/guardian, comprehension and share findings with member. Provide dental prophylactic treatment and topical fluoride treatment. Provide complete dental examinations and treatment planning. Accurately diagnose and help ensure thorough treatment of dental illnesses, disease, and disorders. Perform extractions, surgical procedures, endodontics, prosthetics, periodontics, and restorative services within the scope of experience. Refer members for specialized dental care as needed. Prepare members for dental health services and instruct them in appropriate post-dental treatment, diet, medication, and oral hygiene. Answer members’ questions and perform procedures considering members’ comfort levels. Obtain member’s final impressions. Obtain and accurately record basic medical and dental histories and other relevant information for updating member registration information. Perform dental lab procedures as necessary. Coordinate, supervise, and review all clinical work including diagnoses, and clinical procedures provided by UCSF, UOP externs as well as LMC residents at NAHC. General Duties Actively participate in meetings as assigned by direct supervisor. Participate in trainings of other dental personnel as requested. Maintain positive public relations with members, guests and staff. Member Care: Demonstrate understanding and apply working knowledge of safety policies and ensuring safe member practices. Employee Safety: Safely performs all duties; follows required protective protocols to ensure personal safety as well the safety of others. Must maintain compliance with ergonomic safety standards; be mindful of posture and regularly practice ergonomic stretches. Quality Improvement: Actively participate in internal quality improvement teams and work with members proactively to drive quality improvement initiatives in accordance with the mission and strategic goals of the organization, federal and state laws and regulations, and accreditation standards, when assigned. Work well under pressure, meet multiple and often competing deadlines. At all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with supervisors, subordinates, colleagues, clients and the community. Other duties as assigned by Supervisor. Scope of Work Be able to see between 11-14 members per day, and complete accurate documentation of visit into the electronic dental record (EDR) system by the end of scheduled shift. Approve resident and extern clinical notes by end of scheduled shift. Work as a dental team assisting other providers in completing their responsibilities as necessary, e.g., seeing members, processing refills, clearing member approval queue, and provider inbox. Manage members with behavioral problems or handicapping conditions. Ensure completion of medication refills for dental procedures before member is dismissed from visit. Be an active educator and available for consultation with dental team members, including dental externs, residents, hygienists, assistants, specialists and consultants and other integrative services team members. Maintain requirements of licensure, DEA certification and board certification if hired as board certified. Fulfill and maintain requirements for credentialing, privileging internally at NAHC and externally with payers and regulatory bodies. Provide comprehensive, high quality medical services to members, regardless of age, sex, gender identification, income, national origin or language. Display the highest level of professionalism, integrity and a strong work ethic, serving as a model for all clinic staff. Consider individuals’ cultural, psychological, social and environmental factors in creating treatment/care plans. Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Diploma from accredited School of Dentistry and valid license to practice dentistry as a dentist in California. Valid D.E.A. controlled Substance Registration Certificate. Have current CPR certification. Have at least two years of experience in providing dental care. Residency program may be substituted for years of experience. Have experience and capability in four-handed dentistry. Be able to work well with minimal supervision. Have knowledge and some experience in coordinating services with the orthodontist, pediatric dentist, and oral surgeon. Experience working with an Electronic Dental Record (EDR) system (Dentrix) and working in an EDR environment is preferred. Have a pleasant and professional demeanor and the ability to communicate effectively and courteously in order to promote a professional image of NAHC. Fluent in Spanish is highly desirable. Work experience in administration, personnel management, supervision, budgeting health planning, public relations, or dental research is desirable. Must be able to meet set priorities as directed by supervisor. Must be detail oriented and a team player. Sense of humor is a plus. NAHC is a National Health Service Corp (NHSC) approved site where primary care physicians who are eligible for loan repayment funding can fulfill their service obligation. NAHC is an Indian Health Program site for Indian Health Services (IHS) Loan Repayment Program.
