Description

We’re looking for a Senior Engineer to shape the Data Experience for Backstage Portal, Spotify’s enterprise internal developer portal (IDP) used by organizations worldwide. Today, data lives in silos across data warehouses and transformation tools, disconnected from the software catalog where teams collaborate. Data Experience begins this problem by automatically ingesting dataset metadata and surfacing it in Backstage’s Software Catalog, making data as discoverable and well-documented as any software component. You’ll play a key role in shaping the architecture and product direction while building the connectors, APIs, and UIs that enable our customers’ data platform teams to reduce toil, data owners to run datasets, and data consumers to find what they need. This isn’t just about building yet another data catalog, it’s about expanding Portal’s mission to serve data practitioners with the same low-code experience that’s redefining platform engineering teams at enterprise organizations. The United States base range for this position is $164,448-234,926 plus equity. The benefits available for this position include health insurance, six month paid parental leave, 401(k) retirement plan, monthly meal allowance, 23 paid days off, 13 paid flexible holidays, paid sick leave. These ranges may be modified in the future. Spotify is an equal opportunity employer. You are welcome at Spotify for who you are, no matter where you come from, what you look like, or what’s playing in your headphones. Our platform is for everyone, and so is our workplace. The more voices we have represented and amplified in our business, the more we will all thrive, contribute, and be forward-thinking! So bring us your personal experience, your perspectives, and your background. It’s in our differences that we will find the power to keep revolutionizing the way the world listens. At Spotify, we are passionate about inclusivity and making sure our entire recruitment process is accessible to everyone. We have ways to request reasonable accommodations during the interview process and help assist in what you need. If you need accommodations at any stage of the application or interview process, please let us know - we’re here to support you in any way we can. What You'll Do Develop Backstage-powered UIs with TypeScript and React, and build Node.js backend services that integrate dataset discovery and metadata management with Portal’s catalog, search, and ecosystem. Build and maintain connectors that sync datasets and metadata from industry-leading data warehouses and transformation tools into our Data Registry, giving customers a unified view of their data landscape. Drive convergence across integrations to improve scalability, reliability, and ease of adoption Partner with Portal customers, data platform teams, data owners, and data consumers to identify problems and iterate on solutions. Bring successful internal use cases and customer findings back into Portal as reusable product capabilities. Be responsible for the Full Lifecycle: Lead projects from conceptualisation and design through deployment, monitoring, and customer support, delivering well-tested, maintainable solutions that scale. Make thoughtful tradeoffs to balance near-term delivery with quality, scalability, and maintainability. Who You Are You have experience building backend services and APIs with Node.js . You are comfortable contributing across the stack as needed, including user-facing experiences built with modern web technologies such as Typescript and React. You bring a shown understanding of data engineering concepts such as data quality, governance, transformation, and orchestration, along with experience working with modern data platforms, allowing you to design integrations that align with how data practitioners lead and consume datasets. You bring strong technical opinions and exercise good judgment, while remaining open to feedback and new information. You thrive in full-cycle product development, from discovery through delivery and operations, continuously improving how solutions are built and evolved over time. You are a clear and effective communicator who collaborates closely with engineers, product managers, and customers to shape an intuitive data experience, contributing to a growing B2B product through strong multi-functional partnerships. Where You'll Be This role is based in NYC. We offer you the flexibility to work where you work best! There will be some in person meetings, but still allows for flexibility to work from home.
