Black Range District Individual Placement
Rocky Mountain Youth Corps (RMYC) is a nonprofit youth development organization serving New Mexico. We inspire young adults to make a positive difference in themselves and their communities. Through training and service, Corpsmembers discover their potential for healthy, productive lives.
Individual Placement positions work within RMYC partner agencies, and are intended to provide meaningful job experience for young professionals looking to build their careers in specific fields.
Job Summary:
The Black Range District Individual Placement will perform basic Forestry Technician (Support) duties that include a range of standardized duties, assisting with various natural resource management activities across timber, silviculture, recreation, wildlife, watershed, and range programs. This position operates under direct supervision, contributing to the sustainable management and conservation of public lands by executing essential field and support tasks.
Position Type:
Seasonal, full time, AmeriCorps member
Schedule:
Full time, 40 hours per week. Exact start and end dates to be determined.
Term Length:
100 hour AmeriCorps term.
Compensation and Benefits:
• Biweekly Stipend of $1300 (equivalent of $16.25/hour over 80 hours)
• Education award of $416.17
• H ealthcare coverage is available to all AmeriCorps members at no cost to the member. This is considered primary coverage and is not available as supplemental coverage.
• N on-Scheduled Days (paid days off) are available, with the exact number depending on the length of the term of service (These days off ARE NOT counted toward the service hours required for the Educational Award). Time off in excess of assigned non-scheduled days will require make up work or a stipend reduction).
• RMYC observes all National holidays and are considered approved paid days off, however RMYC reserves the right to have AmeriCorps members work or earn service hours on certain holidays if necessary to meet program requirements (holiday time off hours ARE NOT counted toward the service hours required for the Educational Award).
Key Responsibilities:
Under direct supervision, the member will assist with:
Range Management Support:
• Assist with range monitoring to provide accurate information for following year grazing plan adjustments.
• Perform fence installation and repair.
• Assist with stock management that includes cleaning barns and corrals, feeding stock and moving and maintaining stock equipment and materials.
Recreation and Wilderness Area Management:
• Monitor and note compliance with established rules and regulations in recreation and wilderness areas, covering aspects such as parking, campfire safety, sanitation, and use of picnic sites.
• Make and install road and trail signage.
• Perform routine trail maintenance to ensure equipment and visitor safety.
• Perform routine maintenance and cleanup tasks in recreation and wilderness areas to ensure visitor safety and preserve natural aesthetics.
Silviculture, Wildlife, and Watershed Activities:
• Execute various standard duties supporting silvicultural operations (e.g., tree planting, thinning, data collection).
• Assist with wildlife management tasks, which may include habitat monitoring, data collection, or basic surveys.
General Field Support:
• Operate and maintain basic field equipment, tools, and vehicles as required.
• Accurately record and report field data.
• Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures.
• Perform various tasks within the scope of work for an AmeriCorps member.
Eligibility:
• 16-30 years old as of the position start date
• All AmeriCorps members must be citizens, national, or lawful permanent residents of the United States. State-level background checks will be conducted for non-residents of NM. Background checks will not be required for those under the age of 18.
• Chosen candidates over the age of 18 must complete a pre-employment National Service Criminal History Check and fingerprint scan with the following requirements:
○ You must be truthful in all statements regarding criminal history.
○ You cannot be registered or required to be registered on any state sex offender registry orthe National Sex Offender Registry.
○ You cannot be convicted of murder
• Have a High School Diploma, equivalent diploma (G.E.D.), or agree to obtaining one prior to using the Segal Education Award
○ If you are not capable of obtaining a High School diploma or equivalent or are enrolled in an institution of higher education on an ability to benefit basis you may be considered eligible for funds under section 484 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 1091)
• Able to complete the entire length of the service term, including make up hours if necessary.

Experience:
• No prior experience required; however, experience in outdoor work, conservation, or related fields is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
• Ability to follow specific instructions accurately and work effectively under direct supervision.
• Attention to detail for data collection and recording.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Basic communication skills (verbal and written).
• Ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and work environments.
Licenses/Certifications:
• None.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to perform strenuous physical work in rugged terrain and variable weather conditions.
• Ability to walk long distances over uneven ground, bend, stoop, lift and carry objects up to [e.g., 25 pounds].
• Manual dexterity for operating tools and equipment.
• Good vision and hearing.
Working Conditions:
• Primarily outdoor work in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
• Exposure to insects, poisonous plants, and wildlife.
