Description

SCOPE OF POSITION The Electrician duties include maintaining and trouble-shooting the electric and electronic systems which includes removing existing set-ups and installing new service as required. Electrician work on trouble-shooting machine breakdowns, installation and maintenance of PLC controlled, high-speed machinery, in addition to preventative maintenance of the operation. Works safely at all times, keeps work area clean and ensures that day-to-day operations run smoothly and efficiently. Follow and support food safety and quality guidelines. FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Within the framework of established policies, procedures, and plans, the Electrician is empowered to make decisions and take actions necessary to fulfill their responsibilities. The delegation of tasks does not absolve the Electrician of accountability for the outcomes. Performance will be evaluated based on the effective execution of duties, adherence to safety standards, compliance with Food Safety and Quality Guidelines, and achievement of company production targets. Independently install, troubleshoot, and repair complex electrical and electromechanical production equipment with minimal supervision. Identify opportunities to improve equipment performance by installing modifications, adjusting components, and recommending engineering or procedural enhancements. Replace defective electrical parts, adjust alignments or clearances, and ensure moving or rotating components are aligned and balanced. Assemble and install electrical equipment using both precision hand tools and power tools as required by the job. Perform thorough electrical troubleshooting and fault-finding on drives, motors, circuits, and control systems to isolate and correct malfunctions. Diagnose and modify PLC programs when necessary to maintain or improve system behaviour. Maintain, service, and repair industrial electrical and electronic control systems and related devices, ensuring reliable and safe operation. Prevent equipment failure by applying proactive maintenance practices through maintenance program (CMMS/EAM), replacing worn parts, and performing inspections. Respond rapidly to breakdowns, restoring functionality in the shortest possible time, and analyze failures to determine root causes and prevent recurrence. Occasionally perform tasks in other trade areas when required, to support overall production needs. Interpret drawings, blueprints, written or verbal instructions, and sketches to plan work and ensure installations and repairs are done correctly. Operate production or test equipment as needed to verify that electrical systems and machinery perform to specification. Supervise and direct the work of contractors or external technicians. Ensure full compliance with manufacturing, health & safety, food safety (SQF), NSF, and governmental regulations and standards. Maintain a high standard of health and safety in all aspects of the job, strictly adhere to safety SOPs, and comply with relevant legislation (ESA, OHSA, CSA). Research and identify correct parts and components for electrical systems for procurement requests Assist in maintaining HACCP, GMPs, work instructions, and SQF food safety quality systems in compliance with internal and external audit requirements. Follow direction and priorities set by Supervisors and Maintenance Manager to align electrical work with overall production and maintenance schedules. Maintain all technical documentation related to electrical equipment and systems—including schematics, wiring diagrams, work instructions, and manuals—for easy reference and regulatory compliance. MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Oversee and coordinate electrical maintenance activities. Collaborate with production and engineering departments to align electrical maintenance schedules with production goals. Ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements during electrical operations. Train and mentor maintenance personnel on proper electrical methods, safety protocols, and equipment operation. KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Maintenance Team: Collaborate to ensure efficient and safe electrical operations. Production Staff: Coordinate to minimize downtime and address electrical concerns promptly. Engineers: Work to implement system modifications and ensure compliance with specifications. Supervisors and Managers: Align electrical tasks with overall production and maintenance schedules. Contractors and External Technicians: Oversee and coordinate during electrical or maintenance projects. FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS Solid understanding of electrical systems is essential, encompassing the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting, with a strong emphasis on safety protocols and compliance with relevant codes and regulations. Proficiency in installing, troubleshooting, and repairing complex electrical and electromechanical production equipment, including PLC programming and fault isolation in drives, motors, circuits, and control systems. Regular use of computers, telephones, and other office equipment, including MS Office Suite and EAM systems. Must be available for on-call weekend coverage as scheduled by management and may be required to work various shifts, including days, afternoons, nights, and overtime, as needed. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Ability to lift heavy equipment and components. Prolonged periods of standing, bending, and kneeling. Work in confined spaces and at heights. Use of hand and power tools for extended durations. Exposure to varying temperatures and industrial environments. WORK ENVIRONMENT Manufacturing plant work environment Potential exposure to noise, dust, and other industrial hazards. Adherence to strict safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE). QUALIFICATIONS – EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Ontario Certificate of Qualification as an Industrial Electrician (442A) is preferred. A Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A) certification is also acceptable. Preference will be given to candidates holding both 442A and 309A certifications. A minimum of 4–5 years of hands-on experience in the electrical trade, preferably within an industrial or manufacturing environment. Fluency in English, with the ability to effectively speak, read, write, and comprehend technical documentation and communicate within a team setting. Understanding and application of GMPs, lean manufacturing, and improvement methodologies to enhance operational efficiency. In-depth knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code and the ability to collaborate with ESA inspectors. Certified scissor lift operator with Working at Heights credential. QUALIFICATIONS – SKILLS Experience with Allen Bradley, Beckhoff, and Siemens PLCs is an asset. Strong troubleshooting skills are essential. Background in electronic drives and PLC controls is preferred. Proven ability to implement changes and improvements effectively.
