Job Description Construction & Maintenance Specialist II $42,614.00 - $63,919.00 DOE +$1 per hour worked in environmental Pay *All job-related experience must be included on the resume portion for it to be considered in the salary offer. For Benefits information click HERE JOB SUMMARY Performs routine and basic work in general maintenance, repairs, fabrications, remodeling, and construction, commonly represented by the maintenance and construction trades in maintaining and upgrading existing facilities, grounds, and equipment. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Two (2) years of experience in related building maintenance and/or construction trade. A valid Driver’s License accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire. A valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a county vehicle. Some Departments may require a current Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Medical Card at the time of hire AND/OR attainment of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire. Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements. Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting this position. May be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing. Health Department Only It is mandatory that all new hires receive the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis) vaccine before beginning employment or provide a copy of their immunization record prior to starting employment based on agency requirements. The immunization record must show the vaccine name and date received. Upon hire, a two-step Tuberculosis skin test will be required. The first will need to be placed prior to starting employment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Transports and operates light, medium, and/or heavy-duty equipment. Operates and performs general maintenance on service vehicles, equipment, and assigned hand tools/power tools. Prepares a variety of routine records and reports and maintains records of work requests and routine equipment maintenance and safety records. Assists with loading and unloading dock deliveries and shipments. Troubleshoots and performs basic repair and building maintenance involving electrical, carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, masonry, glazier, and painting tasks. Keeps alert for facility problems that could be safety or security issues. Performs electrical functions involving plug and play, small portable UPSs, and light fixtures, configures cubicles and workspaces that plug into existing circuits, replaces de-energized lamps, outlets, and switches, resets circuit breakers, and changes faceplates. Performs plumbing functions, including changing batteries in faucets and flush valves, adding salt to softeners, plunging sinks and toilets, pouring water in floor drains to eliminate sewer smells, tightening toilet seats, and repairing lawn sprinklers. Changes filters and lubricates motors on HVAC systems. Assembles/disassembles, designs, relocates, and repairs modular furniture partitions, workstations, shelving, and other office furniture. Maintains facility grounds, which may include cutting grass, weeding, watering, aerating, fertilizing, seeding turf, installing and maintaining sprinkler systems, trimming shrubbery, and snow removal. Constructs and maintains curbs, gutters, waterways, sidewalks, retaining walls, fences, and flatwork. Changes exterior light bulbs and parking lot light bulbs and performs parking lot striping, curb painting, and window cleaning. Frequent inspection of hooks, straps, beams, and supports signs of overloading and excess stress. May read blueprints, schematics, hazard warnings, and safety instructions. Lays out jobs, makes rough sketches showing materials and dimensions, estimates labor, determines methods, material, and time requirements, and ensures that code requirements, safety regulations, and safe work practices are followed. May order and maintain stock of materials and supplies. Picks up and distributes cleaning supplies within facilities. May assist licensed electricians and plumbers with work/functions requiring a license to perform. May assist County HVAC technicians with the maintenance and repair of HVAC equipment, systems, air compressors, and boilers. Installs mechanical and computerized locks; programs and maintains computerized door locks; repairs broken locks on doors, cabinets, and desks; cuts keys using a key machine. Calls County locksmith when needed. County Jail Essential Functions: May assist in the maintenance and repair of manual pneumatic electric valves, including control devices such as hydraulic, pneumatic, or electric actuators; checks and replaces component parts and performs general maintenance on equipment; pneumatic tubing and control switches, security gates, and keys. Maintains and repairs vacuum sewage system to include all manual, electronic, and computerized controls; repairs, replaces or rebuilds mechanical and electrical controls; maintains and repairs software and hardware used to control and monitor the system. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSA) Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools, and equipment necessary to perform facilities and grounds construction, maintenance, and repair work Grounds maintenance and gardening (care of flowers, shrubs, trees, fertilizing, etc.) Preventative maintenance techniques Standard Safety Practices and procedures common to facilities and grounds construction Contracting methods, such as building and framing walls, plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry, and the safety procedures associated with all the procedures Proper hand and power tools needed for assigned tasks, their usage, and safety measures when using them Cleaning methods and techniques, sanitation principles, fire codes, and proper use of cleaning chemicals and supplies Proper safety measures and precautions to take when working in buildings and around the public General Geography of Salt Lake County Skills and Abilities to: Respond to public and co-workers' inquiries in a courteous and positive manner Operate and maintain equipment and tools needed to accomplish assigned tasks Interact and communicate effectively with other trade professionals, facility staff, and public Act and work independently with minimum supervision, make decisions, and prioritize tasks Follow written and verbal instructions and procedures Prepare and maintain proper records and reports WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This position requires extensive physical labor: lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects over 50 pounds (occasionally up to 100 pounds with some assistance), kneeling, bending, sitting, and standing.
