Ophthalmic Nurse (Admission/Discharge Nurse) Who are we? The feedback has directly contributed to Newmedica being listed among the UK’s top 50 Best Workplaces™ for 2025. Role overview We are looking for a new Ophthalmic Nurse to join our Shrewsbury site. This will be 19 hours over 2 days per week including some weekend work. This is a fixed term contract for one year. Our Ophthalmic Nurses ensure a safe and efficient in our services, supporting outpatients through their clinical and theatre journeys. You’ll manage the pre-operative patient process by performing a range of clinical assessments and getting the patients ready for surgery. The thought of eye surgery can be a daunting prospect for patients to deal with, particularly just before going into theatre, so our Ophthalmic Nurses need to be empathetic and friendly and able to put patients at ease and help them feel comfortable whist they are being prepared. You’ll care for our post operative patients by helping them relax whilst you explain the next steps and medication details, clearly explaining what they can expect and what any possible side effects can be. Our services are busy, we can typically see 18-22 patients a day in our high-volume cataract surgery provision, so you’ll thrive working in an efficient and fast paced environment. You can also be supporting the consultant in outpatient clinics, undertaking diagnostic testing as required. You’ll be maintaining accurate patient records and in all you do you’ll ensure the highest standards are met in terms of patient safety, confidentiality, clinical compliance and hygiene levels. What skills and experience do I need? You need to be a fully qualified Registered Nurse and need a current registration with the NMC. In an ideal world you will already have ophthalmic experience in an admission and discharge capacity. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of Biometry/Corneal Topography/ OCT/ FFA/ IOP along with skills conducting diagnostic assessments in Visual Acuity/ IOP checks either Tonopen/Goldman Tonometer Visual Fields/ Pachymetry/ Slit Lamp Skills. Alongside the mandatory qualifications the following things will be advantageous: • Previous hospital eye service or private eye clinic experience • Knowledge of clinical practice and aware of current developments in Optometry • Capable of working in a fast paced, high-volume clinical setting • The training and coaching of others • The desire for and commitment to continuous professional development • A competent user of computer systems and programmes • An excellent grasp of the English language both verbally and in written format • A good team player – happy to jump in and support others when required What we’re offering • A salary of from £32,000 (pro rata) • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays • A company pension scheme • Access to a range of benefits including free eye tests, discounted or free glasses, a free 24/7 well-being/counselling/advice service and a retail/technology discount scheme. • An environment where your learning and development is supported through a range of various learning tools and courses. • Working with a friendly multi-disciplinary team passionate about improving the lives of our patients • A bright, spacious and modern working environment, built to the highest standards If you would like an informal chat about the opportunity or to request a job description, please contact [email protected] Our employment offers are subject to receipt of satisfactory pre-employment checks.
