Description

GENERAL PURPOSE To perform maintenance and repairs, including but not limited to troubleshooting and diagnostics, on a variety of diesel/gas vehicles and equipment. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under close supervision, reports to the Sanitation Manager . SUPERVISION EXERCISED Indirect: provides work direction as necessary to assistant mechanic. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Repairs, maintains and/or overhauls diesel and gas, standard and specialized vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, garbage trucks (front and rear loaders), vacuum trucks, knuckle boom or grapple truck, tractors, lawn mowers, and street sweepers as well as specialized systems, including but not limited to, engines, brakes, transmissions, springs, wheels, hydraulics, fuel systems, air systems, and emission systems. Troubleshoots, analyzes, and diagnosis a variety of vehicle problems, including but not limited to, trucks, automobiles, generators, hydraulic operated pumps, gas and diesel driven pumps, small engine equipment and other equipment as necessary. Respond to road-service calls in a timely manner, services and repairs disabled vehicles and equipment promptly. Uses specialized and power tools to make and complete repairs, including, but not limited to, welding and fabricating tools and materials. Assists in maintaining critical parts inventory, equipment maintenance records and preventative maintenance program; requisition parts, supplies, tools, equipment and other items as directed according to established procurement procedures. Plays a vital role in the lubrication analysis process. Make recommendations regarding repair versus replacement based on cost and historical data maintained in the FMS (Fleet Management Software); Assist with budget preparation for expected repairs or maintenance. Familiar with or the ability to utilize electronic maintenance records including, but not limited to, entering and interacting with work orders within the system with the use of either a handheld tablet, a computer, or both. Data entry will include historical data, parts, wrench time and all other data as required. Participate in safety training, make suggestions as necessary; serve on committees or inspection teams when appropriate. Works according to good safety practices as posted, instructed, and/or discussed. Reports on unsafe conditions or defects in equipment. Refrain from any unsafe behavior or act that might endanger self or fellow worker(s). Reports all accidents and incidents (including near misses) as soon as they occur. Follows safety rules and regulations and uses personal protective equipment. Maintains prompt and regular attendance; adheres to City policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness. Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers. May be required to report to the City’s Emergency Operations Center for emergency duty anytime the Emergency SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license, including CDL clearance. TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, including but not limited to the following: knuckle boom, residential/commercial trucks, flat bed dump trucks, recycle truck, haul trucks, fire trucks, dump trucks, and jet truck. Power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work, mechanic’s tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, torches, welders, power saws, tire changers, hoists, hydraulic presses, general hand tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone, mobile or portable radio; welding and cutting torch equipment; electrical installation and test equipment to include metering devices. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. SELECTION GUIDELINES Formal application, rating of education and experience; oral interviews and references check; job related tests may be required. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: High school graduate or equivalent Specialized training in mechanics, maintenance management, or a closely related field; and, Three (3) years related experience and/or Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have or be willing and able to obtain a South Carolina Class A CDL Permit within ninety (90) days of hire and full licensing within six (6) months of hire. Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the construction, design and repair of a wide variety of conventional and specialized, light, medium and heavy automotive equipment, including gas and diesel engines. Knowledge of standard automotive repair tools and equipment, and specialized tools utilized in the servicing of heavy/light, hydraulically operated diesel/gas powered equipment. Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, hydraulic components, electronics, vacuum systems, and compressed air systems. Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions associated with the repairs of equipment involved in handling solid waste. Ability to troubleshoot or detect defective or improperly adjusted components in automotive equipment. Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and automotive diagrams Ability to understand and execute instructions given orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and supervisors Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports. Skilled in the use and operation of modern standard and specialized tools, equipment and materials. Page Break Monday through Friday 6am to 3pm with some occasional weekends and evenings depending on the needs of the business.
