Description Job Summary: The Manager of the Diabetes Program performs the duties of the Diabetes Education Program Coordinator and additional activities of higher complexity and demonstrates leadership skills. Additionally, this role serves as a central point of contact for providers, patients, and staff, and completes specialized duties in the service of the subspecialty program. Responsible for recruitment, retention, and management of clinical and administrative team members in the department. Assesses, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the clinical, administrative, and operational functions of the Diabetes Education and Nutrition program. Oversees day-to-day operations of the Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) services provided by the program and ensures National Standards are met and maintained. For hospital-based programs, provides administrative oversight of day-to-day operations and adheres to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) standards for inpatient DSME. Promotes the Diabetes Education Program by serving as a spokesperson for the program Essential Functions: ▪ Assesses, plans, coordinates, and evaluates the clinical and administrative operations and functions of the Diabetes Education and Nutrition Program to ensure quality, cost effective healthcare is provided by highly skilled and qualified staff. • Ensures that the Diabetes Education and Nutrition Program operations and teammates are in compliance with the National Standards (NSDSMES), Nursing Practice Act, Dietitian Licensure Act, regulatory agency standards, and applicable Atrium Health policies and procedures. • Maintains ADA recognition and participates in the evaluation of the program’s effectiveness by managing continuous process improvements. Oversees the required audits, develops and manages CQI plan. Communicates results to staff and leadership. ▪ Coordinates the collection, analysis, and presentation of clinical statistical data. • Maintains responsibility and accountability for the total quality of care provided by the Diabetes Education and Nutrition Program. •Assumes responsibility in the recruitment and retention of qualified personnel to ensure appropriate orientation, education, credentialing, and continuing professional development of personnel through mutual goal setting and performance evaluation. •Responsible for interviewing, selection, and supervision of nursing, dietitian, and administrative personnel in the department. ▪ Responsible for assuming oversight and direction for staffing, and scheduling personnel, considering scope of practice, competencies, patient needs and complexity of care. • Conducts department and individual staff meetings at regular intervals to exchange information and to promote dialogue. ▪ Demonstrates knowledge of diabetes self-management and educational principles. ▪ Demonstrates knowledge of Medical Nutrition Therapy and educational principles. ▪ Allocates resources to meet area needs and to achieve goals. ▪ Collaborates with staff and leaders to fulfill the goals and mission. ▪ Responsible for budgetary oversight by managing all operational and financial aspects for the program ensuring operational efficiency and financial stability and growth. ▪ If hospital based, develops a cross-team collaboration and multidisciplinary approach to provide excellent Inpatient Diabetes Care. Requirements: BSN is required for all RNs and a bachelor's degree is required for all RDs. Master’s degree preferred or commensurate work experience. Academic preparation and/or experimental preparation in program management and team/people management. Masters Degree required for new RDs after 1/1/2024. Current licensure as Registered Nurse or Registered Dietitian in the state of NC required. Certification by the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (CDCES) preferred, required within 2 years of hire. 2 years as Diabetes Educator or least 3 years’ experience as RD or RN. Academic and/or experiential preparation in program management and care of people with a chronic disease plus team/people management. Demonstrates leadership skills of communication, decision-making, adaptability, coaching and mentoring, conflict management, and problem solving. Will need to understand ADA Recognition Standards as well as take leadership courses through Atrium and ADCES if this is lacking.
