Description
Position Summary
The Preventive Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing routine, scheduled maintenance activities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of manufacturing and secondary operations equipment. This role focuses on inspection, cleaning, lubrication, basic adjustments, documentation, and early issue identification, with escalation to senior technicians as needed to include assisting senior technicians and other functions with planned PMs, inspections and project development to ensure proper PM & TPM implementation.
Scope of Equipment
Equipment includes, but is not limited to:
Assembly and lining equipment
Closing machines
Vision systems
Conveyors and related automation
Supporting pneumatic, electrical, and mechanical components
Preventive Maintenance Responsibilities by Frequency
Daily Preventive Maintenance Tasks
Perform visual inspections of assigned equipment for abnormal noise, vibration, leaks, wear, or damage
Clean machines, guards, sensors, vision components, and work areas per AM/PM standards
Verify basic operational checks (sensors, safety devices, quality checks functioning properly)
Check air pressure, lubrication levels, and obvious loose fasteners
Perform housekeeping in secondary operations and maintenance storage areas
Document all PM activities, findings, and abnormalities in CMMS or PM logs
Escalate safety, quality, or reliability concerns to senior technicians or supervision
Weekly Preventive Maintenance Tasks
Lubricate equipment per OEM or site PM standards
Inspect belts, chains, bearings, hose’s, fittings, and fasteners
Inspect pneumatic systems for air leaks and proper operation
Clean electrical panels externally and check for obvious issues (loose covers, dirt buildup)
Verify basic vision system cleanliness and alignment (no programming changes)
Update PM records and note trends or repeat issues
Monthly Preventive Maintenance Tasks
Perform detailed mechanical inspections with supervision (guards, drives, shafts, couplings)
Inspect electrical connections visually for wear, heat discoloration, or damage
Inspect safety devices and interlocks per PM checklist
Assist with calibration checks of basic sensors and measuring devices
Participate in minor equipment adjustments as trained
Support scrap reduction and quality improvement activities by identifying equipment-related issues
Review PM findings with maintenance leadership
Filter replacement
Quarterly Preventive Maintenance Tasks
Assist with partial equipment teardowns, inspections, and reassembly
Support conveyor PMs (rollers, bearings, tracking, tension)
Inspect vision system mounting, lighting condition, and cleanliness
Assist with pneumatic/hydraulic valve and cylinder inspections
Participate in TPM and Continuous Improvement activities
Verify PM task effectiveness and recommend improvements to PM plans
Annual Preventive Maintenance Tasks
Support major scheduled outages and overhauls
Assist senior technicians with detailed inspections, replacements, and rebuilds
Participate in annual safety, SQF, and GMP compliance PMs
Review equipment history and PM effectiveness with the maintenance team
Complete annual refresher training and required certifications
Assist with inventory review of spare parts and tools
Training & Skill Development Expectations
Develop working knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, and basic electrical systems
Learn to read basic mechanical drawings and electrical schematics
Develop safe use of hand tools and measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, scales)
Participate in vendor, OEM, and internal maintenance training
Maintain compliance with safety, SQF, and GMP requirements
Required Qualifications (Entry Level)
High school diploma or equivalent
Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn
Basic computer skills for PM documentation
Ability to work independently with guidance
Ability to stand, bend, lift, push, and pull up to 75 lbs (team lifts up to 100 lbs)
Fork truck certification (or ability to obtain)
Preferred Qualifications
Technical school coursework (mechanical, electrical, or industrial maintenance)
Exposure to manufacturing, automation, or food & beverage environments
Familiarity with TPM, AM, or CMMS systems (a plus, not required)
