Emory University is seeking a passionate and forward-thinking engineer who thrives on designing, building, and optimizing reliable, scalable storage platforms across on-premises and cloud environments. In this role, you will architect and enhance storage and data protection solutions, collaborate closely with security and infrastructure partners, and provide technical leadership to a team of skilled engineers. Ensures the infrastructure provides the centralized fiber attached (SAN) and network attached (NAS) storage critical to enterprise-wide applications and systems. Owns the enterprise storage and data protection strategy and multi-year roadmap, including lifecycle management, capacity forecasting, technology refresh planning, and the evaluation of emerging solutions both on premise and in cloud-hosted environments. Oversees storage-based offsite replication and the enterprise data protection infrastructure. Manages people resources and processes to administer day-to-day operations. Identifies individual and team skill gaps and developmental opportunities to facilitate career development. Ensures direct and indirect reports have documented career goals and detailed plans for achieving these goals to develop these individuals professionally. Extensive experience in the implementation and production support of an enterprise system. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated hands-on technical leadership—willing and able to engage directly with the technology to troubleshoot, validate designs, and partner with healthcare and university engineers on complex production strategy and deployments. Demonstrated competence and strong working knowledge of storage and data protection in AWS (e.g., S3, EBS, FSx, AWS Backup, and Storage Gateway). Demonstrated competence and strong working knowledge of storage and data protection in Azure (e.g., Azure Blob, Azure Disk, Azure File, Azure NetApp, Azure Backup concepts). Ability to architect cost-effective and efficient data mobility patterns between on-prem resources and cloud providers developing hybrid data management approaches. Deep expertise in enterprise data protection strategy and operations, including Dell/EMC Data Domain (PowerProtect) and related backup, replication, retention, and recovery practices—driving lifecycle governance aligned to business needs. Deep expertise operating unstructured data platforms—especially Dell/EMC Isilon (PowerScale) — including cluster administration, performance troubleshooting, quota/snapshot strategy, capacity forecasting, and lifecycle/tiering design. Strong consultative mindset with a track record of acting as a solutions partner with university and healthcare customers—bringing options, tradeoffs, and recommendations as well as leading the engineering team to fulfill those recommendations.Proactive, systems-level thinker who anticipates and mitigates storage and data protection risks, including recoverability, resiliency, and service continuity. Experience evaluating and recommending modern storage and data protection solutions, including comparing platforms and emerging solutions (including cloud-based solutions) alongside traditional enterprise vendors (e.g., Dell/EMC) based on fit, cost, performance, and operational impact. Experience with Globus and high-speed data movement architectures (endpoints, throughput optimization, and secure transfer workflows).
