ABOUT WILLIAMS LAKE FIRST NATION (WLFN)
The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe.
We are Culturally Centered, Future Focused. WLFN provides staff with an excellent benefits package, RSP matching up to 8%, 3 weeks' vacation upon completion of probationary period, and many other benefits.

POSITION
Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN) is a progressive First Nation community that has taken significant strides to build out its governance framework. WLFN has adopted a Land Code pursuant to the First Nations Land Management Act , a Financial Administration Law pursuant to the First Nations Fiscal Management Act, as well as a Custom Election Code and Membership Code. WLFN is pursuing further opportunities for more expansive self-governance both through the Treaty process and other channels.
Under the general supervision of the Director of Legal and Corporate Services, the Governance Coordinator will participate as an integral member of the Legal and Corporate Services team, providing advice and support services in researching and developing laws, policies, regulations, resolutions and overseeing the implementation, maintenance, and amendment of WLFN laws and policies.
Employment Type
Full-Time Permanent (35 hours per week).
Probation Period
3 months from the date of hire.
Education Required
Post-secondary education in Law, Public Administration, Business Administration or Political Science.
Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Experience Required
Prior experience in a First Nation or other government environment preferred.
An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Overtime Status
Non-exempt.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Interpret and assist with the implementation of WLFN core governance frameworks and documents, including but not limited to the WLFN Land Code, Financial Administration Law, Election Code and Membership Code.
Conduct research and prepare draft laws, policies and supporting materials for consideration by the Director of Legal and Corporate Services and Council.
Support and coordinate the implementation of WLFN laws and supporting regulations and policies, including engagement with WLFN staff, Council and community members as required.
Develop, maintain, and update orientation and governance manuals.
Maintain and administer the WLFN Registry of Laws, ensuring that enacted laws, amendments and related governance documents are properly recorded, organized and accessible.
Assist in reviewing draft laws and policies to ensure consistency with the WLFN Land Code, Financial Administration Law and other applicable laws.
Draft or revise laws, regulations and policies as directed by Council, the CAO, or the Director of Legal and Corporate Services.
Prepare and coordinate Council resolutions and supporting materials for approval, as required.
Support engagement and coordination with local, federal and provincial governments as required.
Complete such other duties as may be reasonably required in support of the position.
