Job Title: Teacher Assistant Substitute
Supervised by: Teacher Director
FLSA Status: Hourly, On Call, Non-exempt
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
At NCCDI we subscribe to the Standards of Ethical Behavior as outlined in the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. It is expected that all employees become familiar with the code and use it as a model for ethical and professional behavior.
SUMMARY Provides assistance to the Teacher with the planning, preparation and implementation of curriculum, and screening and assessment of all children. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Relate to children, parents and staff in a positive and appropriate manner. Provide a safe and healthy environment in cooperation with the Teacher/Teacher Director. Is aware of family cultures and is culturally-sensitive to all children and families. Maintain and reinforce confidentiality in all areas affecting staff, volunteers, parents, children and community. As a mandated reporter, assures that policies and procedures for reporting suspected child abuse are followed. Participate in the Center’s home visits as instructed by Teacher/Teacher Director. Assists with guidance of parent and community volunteers in the classroom. Completes assessments as instructed by Teacher/Teacher Director. Provide information and deliver services in the Head Start component areas of education, health, nutrition, social services, and parent involvement . Continues personal professional development by attending workshops, seminars, and classes to maintain required certifications and licenses as required by the State
commission of Teacher Credentialing and/or by the Office of Head Start. Office of Head
Start r equires that Head Start Teacher Assistants must obtain an Associate Teacher
Credential (CDA) by September 2013. Therefore, in order to meet this requirement, NCCDI
will require you to demonstrate on-going progress towards credential attainment throughout
term of employment until requirements are met.
Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
1. One year experience working with pre-school children preferred.
2. Ability to speak read and write English at a sufficient level to perform the duties of the job .
3. A knowledge of community resources is preferred.
4. Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
5. Must have a genuine interest in children and families.
6. Must have the ability to relate to low-income families and their needs.
7. Must be able to serve children with Special Needs.
8. Must work cooperatively as a member of a team and be receptive to coaching, mentoring and constructive feedback .
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Language Skills
Ability to read documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to compose routine reports and correspondence on the computer. Ability to speak effectively before groups of young children, parents, staff and community groups.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations
1. Current 1 st Aid and CPR certification.
2. Ability to pass criminal record clearance and Child Abuse Index.
3. A current TB test and a statement of good health from a doctor are required as a condition of employment.
4. Valid California Driver’s License with clean driving record.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; to talk, see or hear; to reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel and crouch. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; crawl.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. The employee occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 75 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Exposure to dust and fumes is minimal or non-existent.
