Description
Summary: The Texas Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) is a senior technical role responsible for the execution, quality assurance, and professional ownership of survey deliverables supporting Ascent Geomatics Solutions’ work in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and surrounding regions. This position is anchored by active Texas RPLS licensure, which is considered foundational to the role, and supports oil and gas, renewable energy, and infrastructure projects with a strong emphasis on technically complex boundary resolution and defensible survey deliverables.
This role is primarily internally focused and is not a department management position. The Texas RPLS serves as a trusted technical resource within the Permian program, working closely with the Survey Manager, project managers, and field teams to ensure survey work is executed efficiently, accurately, and in alignment with client expectations and regulatory requirements. Core responsibilities include professional review and certification of survey documents, ALTA oversight, and advanced boundary analysis in fast-paced project environments.
As the team grows, the role may provide day-to-day technical guidance, task coordination, and mentorship to a small number of survey technicians to support workload distribution and maintain quality and schedule performance. A New Mexico PLS license is considered a plus but is not required.
The ideal candidate brings strong technical judgment, practical experience in oil and gas survey workflows, and the ability to adapt that expertise to renewable energy and infrastructure projects, balancing accuracy, defensibility, and project pace without unnecessary rigidity.
Expected Results in the role: Survey deliverables are accurate, defensible, and delivered on schedule, supporting assigned projects. Boundary resolution, ALTA surveys, plats, and related documents are reviewed and certified with sound professional judgment, minimizing rework and downstream risk. Field data and survey documentation are complete, accurate, and processed in accordance with established standards and QA/QC expectations. Survey technicians receive clear technical guidance and task direction in support of quality, efficiency, and schedule performance. Collaboration with Project Management, Engineering, GIS, and Permitting teams results in coordinated deliverables and smooth handoff into downstream project phases.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Technical Execution & Certification
Perform professional review, QA/QC, and certification of survey deliverables, including plats, ALTA surveys, boundary exhibits, and related documentation, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and client requirements. Support ALTA survey execution by reviewing requirements, resolving technical issues, and ensuring deliverables meet contractual and professional standards. Prepare or modify survey exhibits and ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys in AutoCAD Civil 3D on a limited, as-needed basis to support project delivery, QA/QC, and schedule commitments.
Boundary Analysis & Resolution
Execute and oversee complex boundary resolution, including Original Texas Land Survey (OTLS) and Public Land Survey System (PLSS) analysis, legal and record research, title review support, and resolution of boundary conflicts for assigned projects.
Field Data Review & Quality Control
Review field data and survey records for completeness, accuracy, and consistency, identifying deficiencies and coordinating corrections as needed. Ensure survey data, records, and deliverables are processed, organized, and stored in accordance with company standards and data management practices.
Project Coordination & Technical Support
Coordinate with the Survey Manager, Project Managers, and other team members to plan survey workflows, prioritize technical tasks, and maintain schedule commitments. Provide technical input during project scoping, execution, and issue resolution, supporting accurate assumptions, defensible decisions, and efficient delivery.
Technical Guidance & Collaboration
Provide technical guidance and direction to survey technicians and field crews supporting assigned projects, including task clarification, feedback on work quality, and assistance with problem resolution. Collaborate with Engineering, GIS, and Permitting teams to support integrated project execution and ensure survey data is suitable for downstream use.
Standards & Continuous Improvement
Assist with the development, refinement, and consistent application of survey standards, workflows, and QA/QC procedures.
General Duties
Perform other related duties consistent with the scope and responsibilities of the role as needed to support project and team objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have formal personnel management responsibilities. The Registered Professional Land Surveyor may provide day-to-day technical guidance, task direction, and work review for survey technicians supporting assigned projects.
Required Skills & Abilities: Required Skills & Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of land surveying principles, practices, and regulations, with demonstrated experience in boundary surveying and professional certification of survey deliverables. Strong technical proficiency in boundary analysis, legal and record research, title review, and resolution of complex boundary issues across multiple jurisdictions. Demonstrated experience reviewing, executing, and certifying ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, including interpretation of survey requirements and coordination of supporting documentation. Practical experience reviewing and QA/QC’ing survey data and deliverables, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and defensibility prior to certification. Working knowledge of modern surveying technologies and workflows, including GPS/GNSS systems, total stations, and survey data processing environments. Ability to provide clear technical guidance and direction to survey technicians and field crews supporting assigned projects. Sound professional judgment and problem-solving ability, particularly when evaluating risk, resolving technical challenges, and balancing accuracy with project schedules. Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with Project Management, Engineering, GIS, and Permitting teams. Ability to work independently, manage competing technical priorities, and maintain accountability for assigned work without the need for heavy oversight.
Preferred Skills & Abilities
Ability to draft survey exhibits and ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys in AutoCAD Civil 3D when needed to support project execution and quality. Ability to apply sound boundary judgment in energy-related survey environments, including navigating the pace, complexity, and boundary nuances common to oil and gas development. Ability to support renewable energy or infrastructure projects, including execution and review of large-area boundary analysis. Familiarity with survey data processing and drafting environments such as Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D, or comparable platforms. Exposure to GIS concepts and data formats (e.g., shapefiles, geodatabases, KMZ/KML) and experience coordinating survey data for downstream use. Ability to collaborate effectively in multi-discipline project environments where survey data supports engineering design, permitting, or regulatory submissions.
Required Education, Certifications, and Experience: Required Education, Certifications, and Experience
Active Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) license in the State of Texas, in good standing. Minimum of five (5) years of progressive professional surveying experience, including responsibility for boundary analysis, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, and professional review and certification of survey deliverables. Demonstrated experience performing complex boundary resolution, including legal and record research, title review, and defensible decision-making across multiple jurisdictions. Demonstrated experience supporting survey projects from planning through delivery, including review of field data, QA/QC, and coordination with project teams.
Preferred Education, Certifications, and Experience
Active Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license in New Mexico or ability and interest in obtaining New Mexico licensure. Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering, or a related field. Experience supporting survey work for oil and gas development projects. Experience supporting renewable energy or infrastructure projects. Experience working in multi-state or multi-jurisdiction survey environments. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements: Reliable internet access and a designated, quiet workspace are required. Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods of time, including regular use of a keyboard, mouse, and monitors. Other Need-to-know items: Remote work is acceptable. Standard work hours are Monday–Friday, generally aligned to Mountain Standard Time (MST), to support collaboration with clients and internal teams. Flexibility is supported within continental U.S. time zones, provided core team availability and communication are maintained. Travel may be required on occasion for team collaboration, training, or project support. Employment is limited to candidates authorized to work in the United States and able to perform work within continental U.S. time zones. This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed. It is not an exhaustive list of all duties, responsibilities, and skills required.
