This position has an end date of August 28, 2026.
Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton. Work will also take place at Campus Saint-Jean, Augustana Campus (Camrose), South Campus, and Enterprise Square.
We are looking for highly detail-oriented University of Alberta students with a demonstrated passion for accessibility. This position will support the University of Alberta’s Accessible Spaces project. Selected candidates will spend roughly 20 hours per week moving through University of Alberta campuses, taking detailed measurements and completing standardized accessibility audits of building entrances, washrooms, elevators, classrooms and more. These audits will be used to support greater accessible experiences for students, staff and visitors with disabilities who use our campuses. Although the majority of auditing will be conducted on U of A’s North Campus, some members of the team will be required to complete audits on Campus Saint-Jean, as well as Augustana (Camrose), South Campus, and Enterprise Square Campuses.
Responsibilities
Work both individually, and as a team, to complete accessibility audits for the most used buildings across University of Alberta’s Edmonton and Camrose campuses. Collect detailed, highly accurate and replicable, measurements of campus spaces using a tape measure, camera, google forms, and other similar tools. Help create accurate overviews of the key accessibility and safety features and barriers of highly used U of A buildings. Support the collection of building and pathways information that will help us to create an accessible campus navigation map. Support the identification of barriers that may not be on the audit.
Qualifications
Successful completion of at least two semesters of post-secondary schooling on a University of Alberta campus within the last two years. Demonstrated dedication, knowledge and/or experience around the (in)accessibility of the built environment. This can be evidenced through schooling, employment, volunteer activities, or lived experience. Evidence of extraordinary attention to detail. Demonstrated capacity to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Experience using Google Forms, Google Sheets, and Google Docs. Some physical capacities are important, although alternative, adapted, ways of completing the following tasks are welcome: Ability to spend 4-5 hours per day walking or otherwise moving across campus. Ability to use a tape measure (or alternative adaptive measuring tool) to measure, for example, the width of a doorway, the height of a toilet, and width of a room. Ability to read room numbers or navigation signs.
The following are not essential but would be considered significant assets:
Experience conducting Accessibility audits. Formal training or education in relation to accessibility. Familiarity with navigating Augustana Campus or Campus Saint Jean. Spoken and written fluency in French.
