Location: Kariega (Uitenhage) area, Eastern Cape

Reports to: Ellepot Production Manager

NatCarbon Africa seeks a Substrate Supervisor for our Ellepot Facility in the Nursery Department for the large-scale Spekboom Restoration Project in the Eastern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa.
With our partner, Imperative Global, our aim is to restore up to 100,000 hectares of degraded subtropical thicket biome. The Project entails planting Spekboom ( Portulacaria afra ) on privately owned land to improve ecosystem functioning and agricultural productivity over time, promote biodiversity, improve soil filtration, enhance water storage capabilities, and to reduce soil erosion. The Project is estimated to permanently store large quantities of Carbon Dioxide over the Project life, thus positively contributing towards climate change mitigation.
Position Summary:
To manage the substrate preparation area, ensuring consistent quality and timely supply of substrate mix to the Ellepot lines, including receiving, stock management and safety compliance for raw materials.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Oversee substrate mixing and quality control.
Receive, inspect (quantity and basic condition) and store incoming raw substrate materials (coco coir and additives) with proper traceability recording.
Coordinate with Quality Controller for sample testing.
Manage stock levels and rotation of raw materials.
Supervise General Workers in the substrate area.
Identify hazards, enforce safe mixing and handling procedures and conduct safety briefings.
Take reasonable care for own health and safety and that of the team; ensure PPE use, proper ventilation and immediate reporting of incidents.
Report stock levels and any traceability or quality concerns to the Ellepot Production Manager.
General:

Some travel within the Eastern and Western Cape may be required, including to remote locations, with occasional weekend or holiday work to accommodate schedules.

Skills:
Good supervisory and team coordination skills.
Attention to detail in quality and stock management.
Qualifications:
Grade 12 + technical qualification.
Knowledge of OHS Act and risk assessment advantageous.
Knowledge and Experience:
Minimum 3 years’ experience in material preparation or mixing in a manufacturing environment.
Performance Areas:
Consistent substrate quality and reliable supply.
Accurate receiving, stock management, and traceability for raw materials.
Excellent safety leadership and team compliance.
Working Conditions
Manufacturing and material storage areas.
Frequent travel within the Eastern and Western Cape anticipated, including to remote locations.
Travel may on occasion cross weekends and holidays to accommodate schedules.
