Description
Position Summary The University of Illinois Chicago School of Public Health is seeking a dedicated professional to serve as its next Academic Advisor of Undergraduate Programs. This position is responsible for promoting the academic, professional, and overall development of undergraduate students within the School of Public Health from their recruitment through graduation. Serves as a primary academic advisor for students in the BA in Public Health Practice, BS in Public Health Sciences, and Minor in Public Health, providing guidance on degree requirements, university and school policies and procedures, opportunities for enrichment, and campus resources from pre-application to orientation and through graduation. Duties Responsibilities - Engage in individual advising appointments, group advising, and email/phone communication with both current and prospective undergraduate public health students providing guidance on curriculum and degree requirements; school and university policies and procedures; academic and co-curricular enrichment opportunities; and campus and community resources. - Monitor academic progress of advisees and provide support to those experiencing challenges including referrals to campus and community resources as necessary. Exercise professional discretion and judgment to troubleshoot issues and problems that may arise. - Assist students in resolving registration and other issues which impede progress toward graduation. - Document each academically pertinent interaction with individual students and update the uAchieve Degree Audit system, iAdvise, and other systems/databases as needed, to ensure that student records properly reflect degree progress and academic status. - Educate and inform prospective students and their family/friends about SPH degree programs to aid in the recruitment of new SPH students. Facilitate regular information sessions and participate in campus-wide and school recruitment events. - Facilitate New Student Advising and Registration sessions for incoming first-year and transfer students. Assist in planning related welcome and student engagement events. Support SPH students in their transition to college and promote academic success. - Evaluate transfer and study abroad course work to determine applicability of credit toward the degree and update student records (including the uAchieve Degree Audit tool) as necessary. - Review students’ completion of degree requirements for graduation certification. - Review and approve requests to declare the Public Health Minor. Serve as primary reviewer for certification of public health minor requirements. - Support undergraduate public health program faculty in addressing student needs, interests and challenges from a student-centered and inclusive perspective. - Support the Undergraduate Admissions Committee and facilitate faculty review of applications, as needed. - May serve on campus or school committees involving undergraduate student initiatives. Collaborate with the undergraduate public health program director, and other school and campus offices to promote student success and retention through curricular and co-curricular programming. - Perform other related duties and participate in special projects and events as assigned.
