Description
Lochmueller Group is seeking an Archaeological Field Supervisor to support and lead archaeological field investigations and cultural resources work as part of our Environmental Services team. This position plays a critical hands-on role in leading archaeological field work, conducting archaeological surveys and excavations, and supporting Section 106 compliance efforts under the direction of a Principal Investigator. Key responsibilities include:
Archaeological Fieldwork Supervision: Conduct and supervise archaeological field investigations including Phase I surveys, Phase II evaluations, monitoring, and limited data recovery under the direction of a Principal Investigator. Lead field crews during pedestrian survey, shovel testing, excavation, and site documentation. Ensure accurate field recording, mapping, photography, and completion of site forms. Maintain field equipment, vehicles, and supplies and ensure proper use by field staff.
Technical Support & Regulatory Compliance: Support Section 106 compliance efforts through field data collection, background research, and technical documentation. Assist with artifact identification, analysis, cataloging, and curation tasks. Contribute to technical reports, site evaluations, eligibility recommendations, and cultural resources documentation. Follow established federal, state, and client-specific cultural resources standards and protocols.
Coordination & Professional Practice: Coordinate daily field activities with Principal Investigator. Provide technical oversight and on-the-job training to field technicians and junior staff. Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, job hazard analyses, and fieldwork best practices. Communicate field progress, issues, and findings clearly and timely to project leadership. Perform other duties associated with the position as assigned.
Required qualifications:
Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field with a specialization in archaeology
Graduate-level coursework and training in archaeology, including:
Archaeological theory
Field methods and techniques
Laboratory methods
Cultural areas and regional archaeology
Four (4) months or more of supervised field and analytic experience in North American archaeology
At least one (1) year of supervisory experience in archaeological survey, excavation, and/or laboratory techniques
A minimum of one (1) year of experience at the master’s degree level in Midwestern precontact archaeology or a minimum of one (1) year of experience in Midwestern historical archaeology and archival research
Working knowledge of Section 106 compliance and applicable federal, state, and local cultural resources regulations
Demonstrated ability to complete archaeological research, such as a master’s thesis, dissertation, or equivalent technical report
Ability to supervise field crews and ensure compliance with professional standards and safety protocols
Ability to perform fieldwork in varying weather and terrain, including lifting and carrying up to 25–50 pounds
Strong written and verbal communication skills for field documentation and reporting
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites
Preferred qualifications:
Experience supporting Section 106 technical reporting, site evaluations, and DHPA documentation
Familiarity with Indiana DHPA site file systems, reporting standards, and SHAARD
GIS, mapping, or GPS data collection experience related to archaeological fieldwork
Experience supervising archaeological field operations on transportation or infrastructure projects
