Lifeguard Job Description Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis Job Title: Lifeguard Department: Program Management Location: Herbert Hoover Club; Mathews-Dickey club FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Hours: 20–29 Hours Per Week Responsible To: Club Director Job Summary The Lifeguard is responsible for maintaining a safe and positive aquatic environment by supervising pool activities, enforcing safety rules, preventing accidents, and responding to emergencies. Responsibilities include water rescue, first aid, CPR, and ensuring members safely engage in aquatic activities. Qualifications Minimum Requirements Must be at least 18 years old Minimum of three (3) months of lifeguarding experience preferred Certifications & Compliance Current Lifeguard Certification Current CPR Certification TB Risk Assessment and Examination completed within 30 days of hire Acceptable annual Family Care Safety Registry screening per Missouri requirements Acceptable annual nationwide background screening meeting Boys & Girls Clubs of America standards Completion of all required annual training hours per state licensing regulations Physical & Work Environment Requirements Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations Ability to sit, stand, walk, swim, and remain alert for extended periods Ability to communicate clearly in noisy environments Ability to perform water rescues, administer first aid, and CPR Work may occur in both indoor and outdoor environments with varying weather and noise conditions Core Competencies Professionalism, integrity, and sound judgment Strong communication and interpersonal skills Ability to remain calm under pressure Dependability, teamwork, and accountability Strong organizational and time management skills Commitment to confidentiality, member safety, and customer service Essential Responsibilities Safety & Supervision Maintain constant supervision of members using the pool facility Enforce pool safety rules and behavior expectations Respond immediately to emergencies, injuries, and unsafe conditions Perform water rescues, first aid, and CPR when necessary Monitor pool areas and equipment for safety hazards Report and document accidents, incidents, and behavioral concerns Facility & Equipment Assist in maintaining a clean and safe aquatic environment Ensure rescue equipment and pool supplies are properly maintained and stored Report facility maintenance or safety concerns promptly Compliance & Reporting Follow all organizational policies, licensing requirements, and safety procedures Understand and follow bloodborne pathogen and universal precaution procedures Report suspected abuse or neglect as required by mandated reporter laws Support successful inspections and compliance standards Member & Family Relations Maintain professional relationships with members, families, staff, and volunteers Communicate respectfully and professionally at all times Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive environment Attendance & Professional Development Maintain regular attendance and punctuality Keep all certifications current Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities Provide appropriate notice for absences Other Duties Perform additional duties as assigned Organizational Values Employees are expected to demonstrate commitment to the mission and values of Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis through professionalism, teamwork, integrity, respect, innovation, accountability, and excellence in service to members and families.
