Description Under the supervision of the Latino Arts Strings Program Director, the String Instrument Instructor is responsible for teaching violin, viola, cello or guitar to a select number of LASP students. The instructor must plan, organize, and coordinate all musical activities involving his/her students. Through small group and individual lessons, the instructor will work to improve the student’s skills and knowledge. The instructor will create a classroom environment that allows for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve their learning objectives. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES Provides individual and small group instruction to implement the music curriculum and meet the needs of each pupil Plans and prepares lessons, assignments, and instructional materials Instruct students on the basics of music and music theory Teach students how to play their chosen instrument. Works with students on technique, ear training, and performance presence. Monitors and evaluates each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding. Develop and implement plans to improve student performance. Demonstrates and performs all the material that students are required to learn. Communicates with parents and school staff on individual students’ progress. Speaking with parents after lessons to discuss what was covered, what students should practice, and to answer any questions or concerns. Instruct students how to properly care for and use instruments. Provides an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings and activities. Maintains required records and follows procedures and practices. Works with the LASP team to support concerts and recitals throughout the year. Some instructor roles may also require other responsibilities, such as attendance, assessment grades, attending meetings, ceremonies, and other official functions. Instructors should be patient, warm, and encouraging, and should have empathy to connect with their students' needs and emotions. They should also be passionate about music and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Instructors should be open to learning and teaching within the program of heritage education through music: learn how it works as well as how to implement it. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s Degree in Music from a four-year college or university and one to two years of teaching experience and/or training; Or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must specialize in one of the instruments we teach: violin, viola, cello, or guitar. Working Conditions: The position is mainly in a classroom setting. Noise level is moderate/loud, depending on instructional plans. May have to sit or stand for long periods during lessons. Must be able to see printed materials to read music or other documents related to musical instruction. Ability to bend, crouch, and kneel to assist students in pushing/pulling and lifting of musical equipment and supplies. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.  Ability to move around the classroom and school environment, including bending, kneeling, standing, walking, going up and down stairs, and sitting for extended periods.
