Description
General Summary
Under the supervision of a Sergeant or other command officer, patrols the County in order to enforce the laws, investigates criminal activities, polices accident scenes, responds to domestic and other disputes, and answers requests for a variety of services. Performs a variety of functions related to protecting lives and property within the County. May be assigned to road patrol, detective bureau, traffic enforcement narcotics team, contracted policing programs, school liaison, or other specialized assignment. May receive specialized training in accident reconstruction, evidence/property management, crime scene processing, and other areas.
Essential Functions
Patrols the County to enforce traffic and other laws. Utilizes radar and laser speed measuring equipment. Stops traffic violators and issues citations as appropriate, assists stranded motorists, provides assistance during hazardous conditions, and serves as a deterrent to crime.
Responds to a variety of citizen complaints such as robbery, breaking and entering, assault, vandalism, and domestic disputes. Maintains radio communications with the Central Dispatch to seek necessary information, request additional assistance and coordinate activities.
Initiates investigations by searching for physical evidence, collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, taking photographs, and protecting crime scenes. Makes arrests and takes into custody as appropriate and advises suspects of their rights.
Responds to citizens’ calls for assistance, may provide initial medical assistance, attempts to resolve disputes, provides for citizen protection, and provides general assistance.
Obtains arrest warrants through the Prosecutor’s office and signs before a judge or magistrate. Makes arrests on warrants authorized by the courts. Confers with prosecutors to explain circumstances and events for purpose of determining appropriate charge. Obtains additional information and conducts additional investigation as appropriate.
Responsible for the security and transportation of arrested and incarcerated subjects, special needs juvenile offenders, and psychiatric patients in need of secure transport. Transports include from jail to court, medical facilities to court, and jail to treatment as well as long-distance transports to correctional and treatment facilities.
Reports to accident scenes to police the scene, render first aid, request medical service and transportation as appropriate, direct traffic, and investigate the cause of the accident. May take photographs, measurements, and statements as part of the investigation.
Prepares detailed reports of activities, including complaints, accidents, and arrests to provide an accurate documentation of events. Forwards reports to command staff and the Prosecutor for review.
Appears in court to present information and evidence as the case officer or witness.
Provides crowd control services at major incidents and civic and special events. Provides traffic escorts as needed.
Provides school and community service education, includes speaking to community groups and the media on specific safety and preventative issues.
Checks businesses after hours and homes that are temporarily vacated for security purposes. Serves as a courier and bank escort for county staff transporting sums of money. Provided court security as assigned and responds to incidents upon request of the court.
Serves civil and criminal papers.
May be assigned to the detective division, includes conducting criminal investigations, interviewing witnesses, suspects, informants, and other in order to obtain information relevant to criminal investigations, searches for and preserves evidence, prepares and files reports, and performs related investigative functions.
May serve as warrant officer, includes responsibility for reviewing warrant files, ensuring warrants have been removed from LEIN as appropriate, searching for and apprehending persons wanted on warrants, collecting monies collected for bonds and fines/costs, assisting in ensuring the accuracy of LEIN information on warrants maintained in the department, assigning warrants to deputies to execute in areas with no other police agencies, working on extraditions, and performs a variety of related functions.
May be assigned to Traffic, includes concentrating on traffic enforcement, investigating serious injury and fatal accidents to determine for cause, gathering all pertinent evidence and data related to such accidents, preparing scale drawings of crash, and performing other reconstruction functions.
May serve on departmental special service teams such as search and rescue and dive team.
May serve as relief Sergeant.

Qualifications
Employment Qualifications
Education: Associate degree in police administration, criminal justice or related areas, or equivalent experience. [Two years’ experience as a law enforcement officer may be considered to substitute for the educational requirement.]
Experience: No prior experience required. Prefer some related law enforcement experience which may have been in a military, reserve, cadet or other capacity.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of policies, procedures, state, federal, and local laws.
Knowledge of multiple technologies, computer systems, radar units, breathalyzer machines etc.
Skill in communicating effectively, orally and in writing.
Skill in de-escalating emotional and angry subjects Skills in defensive tactics, less than lethal force.
Knowledge, skill and ability in first-aid life saving techniques.
Knowledge in criminal investigation, procedures and techniques
Other Requirements: Certification by the Michigan law Enforcement Officers Training Council. Certification in CPR, First Aid, PBT, radar, and firearms safety. Some assignments may have additional requirements. Valid Michigan Driver’s License.

May be assigned to road patrol, detective bureau, traffic enforcement narcotics team, contracted policing programs, school liaison, or other specialized assignment.
