Position Description
DEPARTMENT: Recreation
TITLE: Swim Lesson Instructor
CLASSIFICATION: Part-Time, Non-Exempt
SUMMARY OF POSITION: Responsible for the planning and instruction of swim lessons, providing a safe and structured learning environment, monitoring participants for safety and skill development, and conducting classes in accordance with established aquatic standards and guidelines.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Hopkins Facility and Aquatics Manager and Aquatics Supervisor
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruct scheduled swim lessons, beginning and ending on time, in accordance with approved curriculum and safety standards.
Teach aquatic skills appropriate to participant age and ability levels, including water safety, stroke development, and basic swimming techniques.
Demonstrate and explain proper swimming techniques and safety skills in and out of the water.
Maintain constant surveillance of participants and enforce all pool rules, safety regulations and emergency procedures.
Prepare and set-up instructional equipment and materials for each lesson.
Assist participants, answer questions and communicate skill progress and safety expectations.
Ensure compliance with departmental policies, facility procedures, and recognized aquatic safety standards.
Maintain accurate class attendance records and participant rosters and report discrepancies as required.
Leave instructional areas clean, organized, and properly secured following each lesson; assist with the opening and closing procedures as assigned.
Assist with program promotions, public communications, and program evaluations as needed.
Maintain professional and effective written and verbal communication with participants, parents/guardians, and the public.
Assist with risk management efforts and promptly report incidents, injuries, or facility concerns to management.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Make recommendations for improvement on equipment, supplies, and program needs.
Attend staff meetings, in-services, and trainings as required.
Qualifications
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
Must be 16 years of age or older
Valid CPR/AED & First Aid Certification at time of hire. Lifeguard certification, Water Safety Instructor and/or Swim lesson instructor certification preferred.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough understanding and skill set of the program assigned.
Knowledge of swim instruction techniques, water safety principles, and age-appropriate aquatic skills.
Ability to effectively instruct and supervise participants in an aquatic environment.
Ability to respond calmly and appropriately in emergency situations.
Ability to adapt to multiple patron needs and abilities simultaneously.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and maintain accurate records.
Ability to portray a professional image of the District.
Special Requirements:
Must be able to enter the water and actively participate in in swim instruction.

The employee may be required to stand and move continuously for the duration of class and to perform physical activities such as walking, swimming, and stretching, or other movements to demonstrate swim technique. The position may require lifting, carrying or moving fitness equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
