Department: Student Equity, Access & Retention Time Type: Part time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Description: Summary: The Center for Student Belonging (CSB) seeks highly motivated and collaborative Undergraduate District Scholars (DS) Student Ambassadors. District Scholars Student Ambassadors serve as peer leaders, mentors, and advocates for students in the District Scholars Program. Ambassadors play a key role during the three-day pre-orientation experience and provide ongoing support throughout the academic year by fostering belonging, promoting academic success, and connecting students to campus resources. This role emphasizes mentorship, leadership development, and sustained engagement rather than residential supervision. District Scholars Student Ambassadors support scholars during a short, intensive pre-orientation experience and provide ongoing mentorship and program support throughout the academic year. Ambassadors work closely with CSB staff to support transition programming, academic-year workshops, and community-building initiatives. They serve as trusted peer resources, helping District Scholars navigate the university environment and build a strong sense of belonging at AU. This position reports to the Assistant/Associate Director for Student Belonging. The Center for Student Belonging fosters a campus environment where students feel connected, valued, and empowered to thrive. Through education, outreach, and advocacy, CSB promotes inclusive excellence and student success across the university. Essential Functions: 1.) Pre-Orientation (Summer) Responsibilities Participate in required training and all pre-orientation activities. Serve as a small-group peer leader during the District Scholars experience. Facilitate discussions and support community-building activities. Assist students in navigating their transition to AU. 2.) Academic Year Responsibilities Provide peer mentorship to assigned District Scholars. Assist in planning and facilitating workshops, study halls, and community events. Maintain consistent communication with scholars and CSB staff. Connect students to campus resources that support academic success and retention. 3.) Community & Administrative Support Foster a respectful, inclusive community environment. Assist with attendance tracking, reflections, and assessment efforts. Support District Scholars and CSB events as needed. Competencies: Peer leadership and mentoring. Cultural humility and inclusive practice. Clear communication and active listening. Time management and accountability. Adaptability and professionalism. Commitment to student success and belonging. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Part-time. 10 hours per week. Salary Range: $18.40 per hour. Required Education & Experience: Must be a current undergraduate student at American University in good academic standing (Cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher). Be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior Student at American University. Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to serve as a positive peer role model and mentor. Willingness to commit to both the pre-orientation program and academic-year responsibilities. Preferred Education and Experience: Current District Scholar. Experience in peer mentoring, tutoring, student leadership, or facilitation. Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Dates of employment during the summer: August 19, 2026 – August 25, 2026. Hours during the summer: 20 - 35 hours per week (in-person). Benefits during the summer: Meals during onboarding and program days, metro pass for DS outings (If needed). Dates of employment during the academic year: Fall 2026 – Spring 2027. Hours during academic year: Up to 10 hours per week (in-person). No housing or meals are provided during the academic year. Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical conduct at all times. Be reliable and fully present during the three-day pre-orientation program. Work flexible hours during the academic year, including occasional evenings or weekends. Uphold all American University policies, the Student Code of Conduct, and CSB guidelines.
