Assists with patient care based on individual patient needs within the scope of practice under the direct supervision of the ED Registered Nurse.</p><p><br></p><p><u><strong>Demonstrates Competency in the Following Areas:</strong></u></p><ul><li>In the field the EMT-Basic responsibilities include: triage, CPR, oxygen therapy, shock prevention, splinting, and spinal immobilization.</li><li>Ability to establish patient airway with oral or naso-pharyngeal airway.</li><li>Able to ventilate a patient with mask/ambu bag when necessary.</li><li>Ability to suction oral secretions when necessary.</li><li>Immobilizes extremities on trauma patients; applies direct pressure to control hemorrhaging.</li><li>Notifies appropriate licensed staff when patient complains of pain.</li><li>Performs and assists with technical skills as defined in scope of practice.</li><li>Adheres to Ambulance policies addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.</li><li>Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity.</li><li>Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.</li><li>Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.</li><li>Documents patient care performed, including vital signs, care and observations.</li><li>Transports patient and supplies safely.</li><li>Maintains ambulance supplies and equipment.</li><li>Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.</li></ul><p><br></p><p><u><strong>Additional duties if employed in the Hospital Emergency Department:</strong></u></p><ul><li>Provides supportive care to Emergency Department patients under the direct supervision of the registered nurse or physician. Performs approved procedures per policy.</li><li>Demonstrates ability to work effectively as a multidisciplinary team member; supports and assists team members in all activities.</li><li>Communicates in an effective and efficient manner with all documentation, and with all co-workers, patients and physicians.</li><li>Recognizes and reports appropriate data to the registered nurse.</li><li>Assists registered nurse and physicians with assessments, examinations and treatment.</li><li>Performs other duties as inserviced, including crutch walking, dressing changes and assisting physician with splint or cast application.</li><li>Adheres to hospital policy addressing standard precautions, safety regulations and guidelines.</li><li>Assists patients from vehicle into wheelchair or onto gurney, as need dictates.</li><li>Responds to patient and visitor questions and needs immediately and within established standards.</li><li>Maintains patient comfort and privacy.</li><li>Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures.</li><li>Assists with preparation of equipment for procedures.</li><li>Transports patients and supplies to diagnostic departments, nursing units.</li><li>Participates in continuing education and departmental in-service meetings.</li><li>Maintains policies and procedures established by the department.</li><li>Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, inservices meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for ongoing education.</li><li>Operates equipment safely and correctly.</li><li>Maintains a good rapport and a cooperative working relationship with physicians, hospital staffs.</li><li>Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.</li></ul><p><u><strong>Professional Requirements:</strong></u></p><ul><li>Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean.</li><li>Completes annual educational requirements.</li><li>Maintains regulatory requirements.</li><li>Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.</li><li>Reports to work on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.</li><li>Wears identification while on duty; uses computerized punch time system correctly.</li><li>Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.</li><li>Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.</li><li>Attends 12 staff meetings annually; or reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.</li><li>Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.</li><li>Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.</li><li>Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.</li><li>Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility, as well as the focus statement of the department.</li></ul><p><br></p>",
