Department Description
The laboratory team at Santiam Hospital has the responsibility for testing samples that may include blood, body fluids and tissue to aid in diagnosis of diseases, illnesses or conditions that may need medical attention. Lab tests are processed for hospital inpatients and emergency room patients twenty-four hours a day. In addition, testing is performed on outpatient and clinic specimens. The Santiam Hospital lab is licensed by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments Act (CLIA) and accredited by The Joint Commission (JCAHO).
Job Description
Provide service to Hospital and Medical Clinics patients by identifying optimal methods for specimen retrieval, preparing such specimens for laboratory testing, and performing screening procedures.
Prior to specimen collection, verify test requisition information via applicable Hospital staff and patient identification.
Using aseptic technique, obtain blood specimens and buccal, nasopharyngeal, sputum, and urine samples.
Track collected specimens with accurate and thorough labeling technique, in accord with Laboratory Service protocol.
Perform tests and document controls for testing waived in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments.
Perform urinalyses using Service equipment.
Perform routine, manufacturer-recommended maintenance on Service equipment, including centrifuges and urinalysis machines
Prepare and send specimens for external analysis and communicate with entities that provide such analysis.
Provide patients and patient families with indicated educational materials and instruction about patient specimen collection methods, including those for fecal occult blood, gastrointestinal panels, twenty-four hour urine output, and clean catch and non-clean catch urine samples.
Monitor inventory of supplies used to execute functions of position, and properly notify designated staff when such supply requires restock.
Perform office tasks, including mailing chain of custody documentation, scanning testing results, and faxing documents.
Participate in Service quality control activity as directed by Laboratory Director.
Respond tactfully and appropriately to evaluation that results from Service quality control and Performance Improvement activity, applying conclusions of such evaluation to improve personal performance.
Annually demonstrate competency in all pertinent proficiency and competency testing.
Perform other duties assigned by Phlebotomy Lead and Laboratory Director.
Qualifications
Job Requirements
Certified phlebotomist, CMA, or equivalent experience
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Training in an approved Phlebotomy Training Program or one (1) year recent phlebotomy experience preferred
knowledge of principles that relate to the position
aptitude in verbal and written communication, including ability to communicate with persons in all age groups
possession of United States proof of citizenship or right to work in the United States
possession of a driver license or analogous identification
willingness to participate in Hospital orientation and educational in-service
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Analytical/Problem Solving Skills – Ability to collect and analyze data and other information, solve problems and make decisions while using clear and logical steps.
Customer Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service within the healthcare community. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
Conflict resolution - Ability to proactively resolve conflicts in a positive and constructive manner. Possess the knowledge and skills to handle complaints, settle disputes, and negotiate with others to reach mutually beneficial decisions.
Time Management - Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work to complete within required time frames and to follow-up on pending issues. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and thrive in dynamic fast-paced environments and under pressure.
Compliance Monitoring – Ability to monitor performance of self, other individuals and processes by applying knowledge of established performance standards from regulatory agencies as well as employer and understanding regulatory licensure and conditions.
Training and Education – Ability to communicate technical concepts and to make presentations and demonstrations to customers and new employees.

Lab tests are processed for hospital inpatients and emergency room patients twenty-four hours a day. In addition, testing is performed on outpatient and clinic specimens.
