Interns will actively assist with daily operations and gain exposure to professional zoo practices. </strong></p>\n<p> </p>\n<h2>Responsibilities</h2>\n<p>Interns will work alongside full-time keeper staff and may assist with:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Preparing animal diets</li>\n <li>Cleaning and maintaining animal enclosures and exhibits</li>\n <li>Observing animal behavior and documenting findings</li>\n <li>Learning basic training concepts through observation</li>\n <li>Maintaining area grounds and buildings</li>\n <li>Adhering to all safety guidelines and protocols</li>\n <li>Interacting with guests and supporting educational programs</li>\n <li>Performing other duties as assigned</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Interns will also complete structured learning components, including quizzes, projects, and a final reflection paper.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong>Learning Outcomes</strong></p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>By the end of the internship, participants will:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Understand the fundamentals of elephant husbandry and zoo operations</li>\n <li>Gain experience in daily care routines for large mammals</li>\n <li>Learn about animal behavior observation and documentation techniques</li>\n <li>Develop knowledge of safety protocols and professional standards in animal care</li>\n <li>Enhance communication and teamwork skills in a zoological setting</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong>Benefits of This Internship</strong></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Hands-on experience in a professional zoo environment</li>\n <li>Exposure to career paths in animal care, conservation, and wildlife management</li>\n <li>Networking opportunities with experienced animal care professionals</li>\n <li>Development of practical skills that support future employment or advanced studies</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Qualifications</h2>\n<ul>\n <li>Second-year college student or recent graduate (within 2 years) in Zoology, Biology, Wildlife Management, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, or related field</li>\n <li>3.0 GPA or higher preferred</li>\n <li>TB test required</li>\n <li>Prior animal care experience preferred</li>\n <li>Strong verbal and written communication skills</li>\n <li>Ability to manage multiple assignments</li>\n <li>Professional appearance and courteous behavior</li>\n <li>Flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays (e.g., July 4th, Memorial Day, Columbus Day)</li>\n <li>Subject to BMV and criminal background checks</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong>Physical & Environmental Requirements</strong></p>\n<ul>\n <li>Ability to lift up to 50 lbs</li>\n <li>Comfortable working outdoors in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, snow)</li>\n <li>Ability to walk, bend, and stand for extended periods</li>\n</ul> \n<p> <strong>Hours</strong>:  Minimum of 20 hours a week for 12 to 16 weeks</p>\n<p> </p>The \n<strong>RISE Scholarship</strong>, generously funded by Battelle, is now open!
