GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this position is to perform work associated with construction and maintaining of roads, bridges and other facilities that are the responsibility of Oconee County. Duties include operation and maintenance of light to heavy trucks and equipment, semi-skilled work and manual labor, while working in various environments and climates. This position will report to their respective assigned crew leader. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job duties satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the duties herein described. Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out but may be considered incidental in the performance of this job. Performs daily maintenance inspections on equipment and vehicles. Operates single and tri-axle dump trucks for the purpose of hauling materials to dump or spread. Operates light equipment (i.e., skid steer, backhoe, mini-excavator, and mowing tractors) for the purpose of clearing, grubbing, and grading. Operates heavy equipment (i.e., front-end loader, rollers, dozer, pan, motor grader, paver, and track-hoe) for the purpose of compacting, loading materials, or transporting equipment. Uses hand tools and power tools frequently (i.e., shovels, hammers, wrenches, drills, and chainsaws). Works inclement weather events; including working after hours. Performs other related duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of the organization’s operations, service, and policies. Good customer service skills. Good motor skills. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Strong maintenance knowledge. Basic mechanical skills. Ability to work safely in hazardous areas or inclement weather. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or equivalent, and one (1) year of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: Required : Must possess a valid SC commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements. Must possess a valid DOT health card for commercial driver’s license. Preferred : None. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus). WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed in a high risk indoor and/or outdoor work environment; may encounter noise, weather, extreme temperatures, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, fumes, gases, vibration, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, or moving mechanical parts. In the performance of their duties, employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as face masks, goggles, boots, gloves, or eye shields.
