Description

Job Description: Academic Success Coordinator The purpose of Alternatives For Girls' HERizons program is to provide comprehensive after-school and summer services designed to support students in improving academic outcomes, developing essential skills, and fostering aspirations for higher education. The program aims to enhance school attendance, promote positive attitudes toward learning, encourage positive behaviors, and strengthen family engagement to create a holistic environment that nurtures student success. Position Overview: The Academic Coordinator will be responsible for enhancing the academic experience of students enrolled in a community out-of-school time program through targeted academic support to address and prevent learning loss, as well as implementing supportive home-school learning initiatives. This role will focus on building strong relationships with students, educators, and families to promote academic achievement, social-emotional development, and college and career pathways, as well as other duties as assigned. Key Responsibilities: Tutoring Academic Assistance Coordination: Develop and implement academic assistance programs tailored to the needs of students, focusing on foundational skills in reading, math, science, and other core subjects. Conduct weekly intervention sessions to provide targeted academic support based on intervention sessions to provide targeted academic support based on individual student needs and identified learning gaps. Train and support volunteer tutors and mentors, ensuring they understand best practices in working with young learners. Monitor daily academic sessions and gather data to enhance program effectiveness, student progress, and engagement. Use assessment data to identify students in need of additional support and adjust intervention strategies accordingly Family and School Engagement: Maintain routine contact with school personnel (teachers, counselors, principals, etc) to recruit students who may need additional support, discuss the needs/issues of enrolled students to plan for academic assistance, and identify opportunities for collaboration. Communicate regularly with families about students' progress, academic goals, and strategies to support learning at home and in school. Provide one-on-one support and academic guidance to students and parents, helping them set and achieve personal learning goals. Develop and support family engagement events based on the identified needs of the families and students. Connect families to community resources through resource referral and family nights/events. Facilitate opportunities for parents to be involved in program design and evaluation. Other duties as assigned Community Engagement: Build partnerships with local organizations, libraries, and educational institutions to enhance academic/enrichment resources and opportunities for students. Represent Alternatives For Girls at community events, advocating for student success and fostering collaborative education environments. Data Management and Reporting: Oversee and review lesson plans for all academic sessions. Collect, maintain, and interpret data and other information related to student outcomes. Prepare reports on program outcomes, identifying strengths and areas for improvement to share with agency administration and stakeholders. Use data to inform program development and make strategic decisions that enhance programming for students and families. Track and report key performance indicators such as attendance, academic improvement, and student encouragement Ensure data is entered accurately and consistently into required systems for reporting and compliance Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, Social Work, Human Service, or another related field. Ability to pass background checks as required by the State of Michigan licensing. One to three years of experience working in a school or community-based out-of-school time organization. Knowledge of afterschool programs, communities, positive youth development, and effective management techniques. Knowledge of child and adolescent early development and effective instructional strategies for young learners. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children, parents, and educators. Demonstrated flexibility and ability to manage challenging situations, including helping to monitor and supervise students during the out-of-school program. Proficiency in data management and reporting tools. Proficient in using Microsoft Office tools Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Must possess a current diver’s license, good driving record, and access to a personal vehicle Preferred Skills: Ability to communicate effectively to multiple audiences. Familiarity with educational technology and resources for education. Experience in program development, community outreach, or family engagement initiatives. Strong organizational and time-management abilities. Highly organized and capable of handling multiple cases Bilingual in English and Spanish Work Environment: This position requires in-person attendance, with opportunities for remote work depending on program needs. Estimated schedule hours would be Monday-Friday 10:00 am-6:00 pm; some weekend hours may be required for events and workshops.
