As a Health & safety Specialist you will Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and refinery regulations policies, and procedures concerning health, safety, and fire protection through education, training, and auditing. Administers the refinery safety program, with policy and procedural approvals, with primary emphasis on implementing, managing, and recommending improvements of the safety program for optimum results. Interfaces with refinery employees and assists with Health and Safety needs and education. Works with all on-site personnel to solve and implement corrections of safety problems and to improve safety effectiveness. Assists refinery personnel with work permit issuance. Participates in department “on-call” responsibilities for all Health and Safety matters. Participates in recommended professional development activities and training at the discretion of management Receives and distributes Safety Data Sheets and update the program manuals as needed. Maintains and assures proper operation of gas testing equipment/H2S monitors. Inspects and performs atmospheric testing for safe work permits and insure same for confined space entries and hot work, as needed for maintenance, turnaround, or construction work. Conducts routine technical assignments under the guidance of more experienced personnel. Completes short-term Health and Safety projects. Provides technical assistance to the refinery and assigned area on safety/fire protection issues. Conducts or assists in incident/injury/loss reporting. Conducts contractor orientation as needed. Conducts assessments on GSP's for contractors and Valero personnel. Assists contractors with safety during turnarounds and plant expansion programs. Provides industrial hygiene support and expertise to the refinery. Attends and participates in team meetings involving all Process Safety Management (PSM) matters and incident investigations. Conducts routine and non-routine inspections and work site assessments. This position is salaried exempt status, which means you are not eligible for overtime pay.
