Description

This position performs daily activities associated with gross examination, dictation and dissection of surgical specimens for diagnostic pathology under the direction of a Pathologists’ Assistant or Pathologist. This position documents the macroscopic descriptions and prepares low to moderate complexity surgical pathology specimens for processing. Duties and Responsibilities: Perform routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of surgical specimens for Histologic processing, according to policies and procedures. Escalates non-routine, complicated surgical specimens to Pathologist Assistant and/or Pathologist Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations Supports department in being inspection ready Processes frozen sections with support as needed, including specimen evaluation, cryostat cutting and maintenance, and slide preparation while maintaining rapid turnaround times. Performs troubleshooting and takes corrective action when necessary. Assists Pathologists with other procedures Maintains cleanliness of grossing area and perform scheduled maintenance Maintain orderly storage of surgical specimens Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications Education/Training Bachelor's degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution preferred or At least 60 semester hours or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum includes Twenty-four (24) semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or Twenty-four (24) semester hours of science courses that include— Six (6) semester hours of chemistry; Six (6) semester hours of biology; and Twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination; and Have documented laboratory training that includes: Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES or the CAAHEP or At least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing. 1 year of Histology and/or surgical gross experience required 3 years of histology and/or surgical gross experience preferred Meets all requirements as outlined in 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489 Skills and Abilities Knowledge of medical terminology Excellent written and verbal communication skills Demonstrate the ability to perform effectively under pressure Must be able to work independently Flexible and committed to the team concept Possess excellent interpersonal skills Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
