Description Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsibilities Health Physics Equipment Technologist role is central to ensuring the safe and effective operation of health physics instrumentation. This position involves performing precise calibration, functional testing, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on a diverse range of health physics equipment, guaranteeing their accuracy and reliability. A key aspect of the role includes meticulously maintaining calibration records and actively contributing to the development of new calibration methods. Furthermore, the Technologist will play a vital part in assisting with the evaluation and recommendation of new health physics equipment to continuously enhance the capabilities of the department. Key Responsibilities Supports studies to formulate, determine and evaluate design criteria for structures, systems, and equipment. Performs calibration, functional testing, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of health physics equipment, including portable and fixed radiation survey instruments, contamination monitors, air sampling equipment, and dosimetry systems. Uses sealed radiation calibration sources, check sources, and calibration systems in accordance with approved procedures, radiation safety requirements, and applicable regulations. Prepares, maintains, and follows detailed calibration and maintenance procedures, and creates or updates calibration procedures and related technical documentation. Performs acceptance testing, configuration verification, and operational checks on new, repaired, or modified health physics instruments to ensure compliance with performance specifications. Maintains accurate records of calibrations, functional checks, repairs, test results, and equipment status in approved logs, databases, or electronic systems. Performs routine and corrective maintenance on health physics equipment, including component replacement, adjustments, and minor electronic/mechanical repairs. Supports the development and improvement of calibration methods, maintenance practices, and quality control checks for health physics instrumentation. Assists in evaluating and recommending health physics equipment, calibration systems, spare parts, and related tools based on technical performance and operational needs. Packages and receives health physics instruments and related components in accordance with internal procedures and applicable requirements. Performs inventory management of health physics instruments, calibration sources, spare parts, and consumables; maintains accurate inventory records and supports lifecycle management. Coordinates the scheduling of calibrations, maintenance, and functional checks to ensure equipment availability and compliance with required intervals. Provides technical support to radiation protection, operations, and engineering personnel regarding the proper use, limitations, and performance of health physics equipment. Assists in troubleshooting field-reported issues with health physics instruments and recommends corrective actions or equipment changes as needed. Supports operations at Nuclear or High Hazard facilities by ensuring health physics equipment is available, properly calibrated, and maintained to support radiological work and monitoring activities. Qualifications Associate degree in a field related to the position (e.g., electronics, instrumentation, radiation protection, or related technical discipline) plus at least 3 years’ progressive related experience, or High School diploma plus 5 years’ progressive related experience in electronics, health physics equipment, radiation detection instrumentation, or closely related technical work. Understanding of radiation detection principles, health physics concepts, and calibration methodologies (preferred but can be trained). Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings. Ability to work safely with radioactive calibration sources and in controlled radiological environments. Ability to pass the Radiological Control Technician Core and Site Academics. May be required to participate in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). The Primary work location will be Mercury, NV (located approximately 80 miles from Las Vegas). Work schedule will be 4/10s, Monday through Thursday (subject to change). Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Must possess a valid driver’s license. MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age.
