EHS Specialist
NEXXTA is a U.S.-based manufacturing partner with four Great Lakes facilities delivering precision, speed, and scale. We serve industry leaders across transportation, energy, medical, and defense, offering tariff-free production, open capacity, and rapid ramp-up. With in-house R&D and engineering, we help customers strengthen supply chains and build confidently in America.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The EHS Specialist is a plant-based role responsible for executing day-to-day environmental, health, and safety programs at the facility level. This position ensures the plant operates in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and applicable state regulations, and fosters a proactive safety culture on the production floor. The EHS Specialist partners with plant leadership, supervisors, and employees to identify hazards, prevent incidents, maintain regulatory compliance, and drive continuous improvement in EHS performance.
JOB DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.
Conduct regular safety inspections and floor walkthroughs to proactively identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and at-risk behaviors; issue corrective actions and track to closure.
Lead incident and near-miss investigations using root cause analysis; develop and implement corrective and preventive actions to prevent recurrence.
Maintain plant-level EHS documentation, including OSHA 300/301 logs, SDS library (HazCom/GHS), written programs, SOPs, and work instructions in accordance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
Manage plant-level permit and safety programs, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, and machine guarding; ensure programs are current, employees are trained, and requirements are actively enforced on the production floor.
Monitor federal, state, and local regulatory changes (OSHA 29 CFR 1910, EPA, and applicable state requirements) and update plant programs and documentation to maintain compliance.
Develop and deliver plant-level EHS training programs covering required topics (e.g., LOTO, hazard communication, emergency response, PPE, forklift safety, ergonomics) for new hires and ongoing workforce education.
Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of training content.
Maintain a plant training matrix to track completion of required EHS training by role; coordinate with HR to integrate EHS requirements into new hire orientation.
Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and identify areas for improvement.
Support and develop designated plant-floor trainers by providing resources, coaching, and tools to deliver safety training effectively within their work groups.
Manage plant environmental compliance obligations, including waste management (RCRA), stormwater (NPDES), air permits, and spill prevention; coordinate with corporate EHS on reporting and permit renewals.
Facilitate the plant safety committee; support safety communication efforts, including toolbox talks, near-miss reporting, safety recognition programs, and safety bulletin boards.
Manage the plant PPE program, including hazard assessments, PPE selection, employee fit and training, prescription safety eyewear, and safety footwear; maintain inventory and enforce compliance on the production floor.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES):
Minimum 2–5 years of EHS experience in a manufacturing environment; experience in plastics, automotive, or industrial manufacturing strongly preferred.
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced production environment.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety, Occupational Health, Safety Science, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 (General Industry) and applicable EPA regulations; experience with MIOSHA or other state-specific EHS standards is a plus.
ASP, CSP, CHMM, or OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification preferred; willingness to obtain certification supported.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); experience with EHS management software or LMS platforms is a plus. Must be able to work in a manufacturing environment, including extended time on the production floor.
Ability to travel occasionally to other Nexxta facilities for cross-site EHS projects, audits, or training as needed.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to influence safety behaviors and build accountability at all levels of the organization, from production operators to plant leadership.
