Description

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI), an affiliate of General Atomics, is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high-resolution surveillance systems. We have an exciting opportunity for an entry-level Flight Test Engineer to join the Mechanical Engineering Flight Test Team in Poway, CA. The successful candidate will support the development and execution of system-level UAV flight test programs across the company product line and contribute to mechanical development and test activities. This is a hands-on role that involves significant work with company products and systems, both in the lab and at remote test locations throughout the continental U.S. Flexible work schedules, extended hours, and travel are often required. The position is highly cross‑functional, with expectations to build and maintain positive working relationships at all levels of the organization. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Apply basic engineering knowledge to analyze, investigate, and resolve routine engineering problems related to vibration, structural, environmental, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Aid in developing flight‑hardened instrumentation systems tailored to flight test programs. Assist in the design and analysis of test fixtures and setups to support testing of actuators, high‑load systems, and other mechanical components. Collaborate on mechanical bench test designs and assist the team with completion of drawings. Set up, configure, and conduct bench tests of complex instrumentation systems and data acquisition networks to validate methods and accuracy. Install measurement sensors and data acquisition systems on aircraft for ground and flight testing. Draft test plans and test procedures, ensuring alignment with project goals, safety requirements, and regulatory obligations. Perform functional testing of equipment and systems using standard engineering and scientific principles, with a focus on aircraft components and associated mechanical systems. Assist in the development and execution of test plans for mechanical and flight test systems, including troubleshooting and improving system performance. Obtain and analyze test data, ensuring accuracy and relevance to system performance; use Excel and other Microsoft Office tools to process and communicate results. Quickly learn new concepts to troubleshoot electromechanical, hydraulic/pneumatic, and data acquisition systems in real time during testing. Perform modal and ground vibration tests (GVT) of components on and off the aircraft. Define, communicate, and document flight and ground test objectives, and support the design of appropriate instrumentation and mechanical test setups. Develop and document test procedures, technical specifications, and test activities/results; maintain technical records and configuration documentation. Provide technical support, system health monitoring, and documentation throughout test activities. Identify challenges, roadblocks, or issues and recommend suitable courses of action for prevention or resolution. Report progress, assess system performance, and provide detailed anomaly descriptions to software, hardware, and project engineering teams. May provide direction to design staff or technicians working on test setups, instrumentation, or equipment modifications. Collaborate with flight operations, engineering, and program management for flight test activities, including scheduling and logistics of unmanned flight tests as needed. Maintain readiness of test assets, including hardware/software configuration, procedures, and equipment. Maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information and ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and company procedures. Work safely in environments involving high‑load systems, pressurized equipment, and active flight test operations. Perform other duties as assigned. We recognize and appreciate the value and contributions of individuals with diverse backgrounds and experiences and welcome all qualified individuals to apply.
