Description
Description
Job Title: CURI Academic Year Researcher (WS-NST2)
Classification: Student Employee (non-exempt)
Name and Address of Employer: St. Olaf College, 1520 St. Olaf Ave, Northfield, MN 55057
If the position requires the student to work off campus, provide the name and address here:
Department Name: CURI
Unit Number (5 digits): 16118
Length of Position: See Employment Authorization
Contact Person/Supervisor: Faculty advisor listed in CURI Elevator database
Wage Range: $13.50-15.50/hour
Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position): Students work together with a faculty member on scholarly or artistic projects.
My project is oriented toward my own ongoing research project, as well as curricular development. The principal task is to transcribe a lengthy 1723 English chancery court record featuring a financial dispute between an alleged pirate and his London creditors. The question involves the longterm financial health of a reformed pirate: how capable were such individuals of rebounding? That is, did the individual in question, Richard Tookerman, restore his finances or remain impoverished due to allegations of his criminality? This is just one piece of the puzzle. I am writing an article reprising one that I published in 2017, since which time new information has come to light, including this chancery case. I also need to have three Chancery cases transcribed that involve the financial entanglements of William Rhett of South Carolina (1666-1723) that will go toward the completion of a book-length study of the slave trade and piracy. Upon completion of the Chancery cases, I am hoping to have a student transcribe records from the British National Archives dating to ca. 1690-1775 that I have obtained over the last fifteen years so that I may use them in my courses. Transcribing them will greatly increase accessibility for my students, many of whom have never been taught cursive writing. These include reports on maritime affairs, witchcraft trials, and property records. Given the subject matter of my spring 2027 courses, I would anticipate focusing on documents related to the 1721 and 1775-80 Smallpox Epidemics in North America, as well as the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic in Philadelphia. I would be happy with whatever work can be accomplished between September 10-December 10, 2026. Completing the chancery case by that time would enable me to revise the article next fall before submitting it in January 2027. Transcribing documents for classroom use will enable me to use them for spring 2027 and beyond.
Transferable Skills: Research and presentations.
Duties and Responsibilities: Each project has its own timing (number of hours per week and number of weeks), as determined by the individual faculty mentor. See the CURI Digital Olaf database for individual project descriptions and details.
Qualifications: (Education/Experience/Skills) A student interested in applying for the CURI academic year program must be enrolled as an on-campus St. Olaf student. There is no GPA requirement that must be met in order to apply for the program, but a student’s academic record will be considered during the selection process. Skills are dependent on individual projects.
If you don’t have a work award and select, No, to the application questions your application will be automatically rejected by the system. If you apply and are rejected please contact Erin Eltonga to resolve this for you.
