This position is a 15 month term contract.
Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton and APL sites such as Edmonton General Hospital or BaseLab.
This contract involves teaching and facilitating in didactic and clinical years of the Bachelor of Science program in Medical Laboratory Science (BSc in MLS), in the department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology.
The successful candidate will be willing and able to teach lectures and labs to students in years 2, 3 or 4, in any of the five main disciplines offered by the MLS program, as well as phlebotomy, hematology, and advanced courses that are developed in response to the changing needs of healthcare. The successful candidate will be flexible and nimble, have the desire to constantly learn new things, be curious, be energetic, and be dedicated to providing the best educational experience for the students, while meeting the needs of the department, the clinical partners, and the patients who will be served by our students. They will participate in scholarly teaching by remaining current and competent in the assigned course content, course design, and instructor performance in the classroom or clinical/ fieldwork setting.
They will undertake continuous learning in the field of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, including the ever-changing clinical landscape, and adapt the curriculum accordingly. They will be part of a team of instructors and will work collaboratively with fellow instructors from within the program, as well as from departments in the University of Alberta, and from clinical partners such as Alberta Precision Labs.
They will be expected to ensure availability for learner consultation within and outside of scheduled class, laboratory, or clinical practicum times and to participate in inter-professional teaching activities.
Responsibilities
Teaching: instructing learners in settings including (but not limited to): classroom and laboratory, fieldwork/clinical teaching and supervision, electives, guest lectures, seminars, experience-based learning, simulation, distance and web-based delivery. Within the context of the MLS program, delivers assigned course content, modifies course design, and instructional methodology as required to maintain adherence to current practice and competencies set by appropriate accreditation bodies. Assist students requiring academic support. Engage and lead Teaching Assistants in the facilitation of the development of laboratory skills in the Year 2 students. Evaluation: Within the context of the MLS program, deliver learner evaluation methodologies for assigned course(s), monitor learners; evaluate the academic and practical proficiency of students; prepare and grade examinations and assignments; monitor course content and curriculum to ensure continued relevance. Program activities: Provide instruction and contribute to content for incoming student orientation activities; provide instruction, supervision, and/or mentorship to learners involved in community engagement as part of their course requirements; collaborate with MLS faculty in the maintenance and development of academic and clinical curricula, along with developing and maintaining robust and productive relationships with clinical and faculty partners; maintain a connection with instructors in all years of the program to ensure optimization of curriculum development and delivery Preparation: ensure maintenance of procedure manuals for student laboratories in coordination with the Laboratory Coordinators; organize and coordinate lecture and laboratory schedules; prepare and facilitate/present lectures; prepare and facilitate laboratory sessions; maintain records of student progress; develop and maintain an active eClass and/or Canvas LMS site
Qualifications
Baccalaureate degree required Recent clinical experience in hematology/hemostasis, chemistry, transfusion, microbiology, and/or histology Recent experience in adult education General, current Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science(CSMLS) certification (maintained annually) Current College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA) registration (maintained annually) Completion of a Medical Laboratory Science or Technology program from an accredited educational institution Familiarity with clinical laboratory practice Outstanding critical thinking and organizational skills Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt communication style and to collaborate with colleagues Excellent interpersonal skills and a high degree of emotional intelligence Able to work effectively within teams/committees and provide constructive feedback to colleagues Interest and/or experience in undergraduate education Experience working with undergraduate students is an asset; as is a Master's or PhD Clinical experience in more than one Laboratory Science discipline is an asset Experience/expertise with flow cytometry would be an asset but is not required.
