2026 Saline County Sheriff Captain - Patrol Job Description Exempt:                                Yes Department:                          Sheriff's Office Reports To:                            Chief Deputy/Sheriff Location:                                735 S Neeley St Benton, AR 72015 Safety Sensitive:                   This position is designated as safety/security sensitive and is subject to pre-employment, reasonable suspicion and random drug and alcohol screening. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION A Patrol Captain is responsible for supervising the entire patrol division; approves all reports; responsible for the DWI and Seat-Belt Grant/Programs; services as the Public Information Office (PIO) and handles media relations lead for the Saline County Sheriff's Office.  Captains are 3rd in the command chain and are subject to supervising any and all employees of the Saline County Sheriff’s office, which is comprised of six (6) divisions and over 100 employees.  This position is designated as a "safety sensitive position" as defined by Act 593 of 2017. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Considered to be third in command chain of the Saline County Sheriff's Office. Subject to supervising any and all employees of the Saline County Sheriff's Office, which is comprised of six (6) divisions and over one hundred (100) employees. This duty is performed as needed. Oversees patrol supervisors and deputies consisting of 24 sworn personnel. This duty is performed daily. Coordinates with Criminal Investigation Division (CID) on allocating resources to high crime areas and works closes with surrounding law enforcement agencies in collaborating effective patrol operations. Develops and maintains a good working relationship with Federal Law Enforcement agencies. This duty is performed daily. Reviews work and reports by all deputies in the Patrol Division. This duty is performed daily. Handles complaints of subordinates, initiates and reviews disciplinary actions. This duty is performed as needed. Schedules shifts and approves leaves. This duty is performed weekly. Gives assignments to deputies as required by needs of Sheriff's Office. This duty is performed daily. Prepares variety of reports and records related to patrol functions. This duty is performed weekly. Approves time sheets; attends and schedules staff meetings; assists with developing budget. This duty is performed weekly. Assist in developing, writing and implementing Sheriff's Office Policy and Procedures Manual; updates manual as needed. This duty is performed as needed. Disciplinary and hiring boards. This duty is performed as needed. Receives and responds to complaints from the public. This duty is performed daily. Attends meetings with community leaders to discuss current issues and establishes solutions to perceived/real problems confronted by citizens. This duty is performed monthly. The person in this position can be moved at any time to cover any division and is expected to learn the workflow and procedures of all divisions under the Sheriff’s Office. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or have passed the General Education Development (GED) testing indication high school graduation level.  Home school diplomas will not substitute for the above unless approved by the Commission.  Documentary evidence shall consist of official transcript, diplomas or GED test report form.  In unusual circumstances the Commission may be required to accept other documentation and in such cases the decision of the Commission will be final. Home schooling diplomas will not be accepted unless approved by the Commission.  Previous law enforcement experience for 9 to 10 years and/or and 8 years related management experience. COMMUNICATION SKILLS Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy/procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public. ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format; ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS No felony convictions. Possess or be able to immediately obtain a valid Arkansas Driver's License. Provide proof of U.S. Citizenship upon request. Certified Law Enforcement Officer The ability to obtain an Instructor Certification The ability to obtain a Firearms Instructor Certification Complete a minimum of 24 hours of training per year; Qualify with a score of 80% with all firearms he/she will be using or carry; Complete mandated yearly classes as specified by the Commission on Law Enforcement and Training. All Sworn deputies, including detention deputies, must perform the following: Plank (no time requirements) Pushups (no number of time requirements) One (1) mile walk (no time requirements) SOFTWARE SKILLS REQUIRED Intermediate: 10-Key, Accounting, Alphanumeric Data Entry, Contact Management, Database, Presentation/PowerPoint, Spreadsheet, Word Processing/Typing RESPONSIBILITY FOR WORK OF OTHERS Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities may include but not limited to interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Supervises a large group (16-25) of employees who are engaged in similar activities. Supervises the following departments: Patrol Division or could be reassigned to cover a different division at any time. USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTERS Regular use of highly complex machines and equipment; specialized or advanced software programs. WORKING CONDITIONS Outside or inside working environment, wherein there are potentially hazardous working conditions and life-threatening situations exist (fire, chemicals, electrical sources, heights, dangerous people, etc.) all the time per job duties and responsibilities. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS The following work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. CAPTAIN Starting salary of $77,043 annually for a new hire. This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and not subject to overtime. This position requires the applicant to have CLEST certification prior to employment with 9-10 years of experience. Promotional salary of up to $85,603 annually for an established employee (an individual who has been a full-time Saline County employee for more than 90 days). This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and not subject to overtime.  This position requires the applicant to have CLEST certification prior to employment with 9-10 years of experience. This position will have holidays off dependent upon workload as well as it may require some evenings to instruct shifts. This position is eligible for certificate pay according to the certification schedule and paid the first pay period in December each year. Bilingual pay once proficiency has been established. This position is designated as a “safety sensitive” position as defined by Act 593 of 2017. An essential function of this position is the ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner. Group health, dental and life insurance is paid by the County for the employee’s coverage provided the employee obtains a wellness check within designated time frame. For employee retirement, the County contributes 15.32% per pay period of the employee’s gross towards the employee’s retirement through the Arkansas Public Employees’ Retirement System.
