Description Position Title: Associate College Chaplain. Department: College Ministry. Classification: Exempt. FTE: 1.0. Work Schedule: Flexible work arrangements can be proposed and are subject to approval by HR and relevant supervisors. September – May : anticipate working 40-50 hours per week, including Sunday mornings, actual schedule varies each day; evening and weekend hours required for special events; travel up to 5% of the work schedule, which includes local (Twin Cities metro area) and national travel; overnight trips average 1-2 trips per year. June – August: Anticipate working 25-30 hours per week (with flexible vacation time), typically between the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., as well as occasional evening hours required for special events; some weekends required for conferences and special events. Work Location: On Campus. Salary Range: $56,000 - $63,000. Position Overview: Develop and lead programming for Christian, multi-religious, spiritual and non-religious students. Plan and lead educational programs and events that help to deepen the religious, spiritual, and ethical lives of all students. The scope of these programs will reflect the religious and non-religious diversity of the St. Olaf College student body and may include topics such as identity, power, belonging, and community. Coordinate a program of spiritual practices that address the religious and spiritual needs of the college community (e.g. yoga, tai chi, and meditation). Support the development of, and participate in, programming designed to foster inter-religious education and engagement. Participate in the College Ministry Team’s support of student organizations from all religious traditions. Lead Christian worship, religious education, and program support for St. Olaf students. Participate in the planning and leadership of Christian worship (daily chapel and Sunday services: presiding and preaching regularly). Advise the St. Olaf College Student Congregation Council. Provide learning opportunities for students, such as Bible studies and book groups. Coordinate a program of spiritual practices that address our diverse Christian population. Engage with the ELCA and its colleges through meetings, networks, and initiatives. Engage with other clergy in the Northfield community and beyond. Faithfully represent the college in public events and external organizations. Provide pastoral care. Meet with students to discuss matters of college life, vocational discernment, and faith. Foster relationships with students and build inclusive community through participation in community events, student organizations and student activities. Serve as chaplain to the college community. Collaborate with other units of the college to foster student development and well-being. Participate as a spiritual leader in community events as requested, including alumni and parent events. Plan and participate in special services (e.g. baccalaureate, convocations, memorial services). Collaborate with the Community and Belonging Division on institutional priorities and programming. Serve on standing and ad hoc college committees (e.g. Student Life Committee). Other Duties. Support, respect, and commit to embracing diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view to build a strong and inclusive community. Complete and meet deadlines for required training and performance management cycle. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervision Received and Exercised: Reports to the College Chaplain & Pastor. This position does not supervise staff or student workers. Required Qualifications: MDiv/MTS or equivalent. 3+ years of experience as a pastor or chaplain. Experience planning and leading worship services. Strong understanding of major world religions, along with familiarity with approaches to spiritual life, meaning making, and wellbeing. Demonstrated capacity to support individuals and groups across a wide range of religious, spiritual, and secular frameworks, and to collaborate effectively with students and colleagues from diverse religious and cultural practices. Proven ability to design, lead and manage inclusive and engaging programs in a culturally and religiously diverse environment, while balancing multiple priorities and responsibilities. Experience facilitating both large and small group settings, including worship, ritual, educational programs, and discussion-based gatherings. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills. Experience mentoring or supervising student leaders, interns, or peer educators. Knowledge of best practices in pastoral care and counseling, with a strong commitment to confidentiality, ethical practice, and professional boundaries. Preferred Qualifications: Rostered in the ELCA or the equivalent in ELCA full communion partner churches. Experience working with college students or other young adult population. Prerequisites: Employment in this position is conditioned upon successful completion of a background check which may include: criminal background checks, reference checks, verification of work history, verification of any required academic credentials, licenses, and/or certifications, a motor vehicle check, verification of DOT certification, a credit check, employment eligibility verification, and/or a pre-employment physical.
