Orthopedic Technicians assist physicians and professional nursing personnel in the care and treatment of patients with orthopedic needs in a hospital and/or clinic facility; maintain the cast room and orthopedic equipment and devices; assist with the application and removal of plaster casts; and perform other related duties as required.
Job Scope:
Incumbents perform duties which are directly related to the physical care of patients in an inpatient and outpatient facility. Incumbents order supplies and maintain orthopedic instruments and equipment; prepare patients for application of orthopedic devices; remove plasters; dispense, apply, and adjust traction apparatus according to orthopedists’ orders; assist patients in walkers and on crutches; care for plaster casts; instruct patients in simple exercises; assemble orthopedic fracture tables; set up equipment for skeletal traction; prepare canvas covers, and any other appropriate frames; apply appropriate cervical and pelvic traction; assist physicians with balance suspensions, lateral and other types of traction; maintain and assemble appropriate tables; make rounds with orthopedist and assist in dressing changes; apply braces; check and adjust braces for function, comfort and fit; demonstrate crutch walking gaits, cane walking, and weight bearing of fractures on casts; measure to prevent excessive swelling on new fractures; initiate charge documents; and keep records and charts. Incumbents may assist in the orientation and training of technicians, medical students and residents in the proper use of orthopedic procedures and devices, advanced/complex technical aspects of orthopedic care and new techniques.

Custom Scope:
Under the direct supervision of the Practice Manager, guided by policies and procedures of the Ambulatory Services and in collaboration with the clinical staff and the physician leadership the Orthopedic Technician/Medical Assistant II assists in the delivery of care to patients in an ambulatory multi-specialty group practice. Work includes a variety of personal care and procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. They will perform assigned patient care in support of the specialty care services provided to patients within the practice. Incumbents perform duties which are directly related to the physical care of patients in an inpatient and outpatient facility. Incumbents order supplies and maintain orthopedic instruments and equipment; prepare patients for application of orthopedic devices; remove plasters; dispense, apply, and adjust traction apparatus according to orthopedists’ orders; assist patients in walkers and on crutches; care for plaster casts; instruct patients in simple exercises; assemble orthopedic fracture tables; set up equipment for skeletal traction; prepare canvas covers, and any other appropriate frames. They are responsible for knowledge of, competency and compliance with all health and safety policies and procedures as implemented by the department and/or work unit and UCSF Medical Center. Will initiate charge documents; and keep records and charts. Incumbents may assist in the orientation and training of technicians, medical students and residents in the proper use of orthopedic procedures and devices, advanced/complex technical aspects of orthopedic care and new techniques. The individual will also room and take vitals for all patients in addition to casting responsibilities. Must adhere to departmental policies and procedures, including telephone and house standards.
They work as a team member with other staff and consistently project a professional, caring and courteous demeanor. The Orthopedic Technician is responsible for the efficient patient flow and provides support to multiple physicians. They communicate with referring physicians’ offices and serve a liaison for the outside providers. This position requires flexibility to work at the main campus in Oakland and/or the satellite clinics in Brentwood, San Ramon, and Walnut Creek, if necessary

Work includes a variety of personal care and procedures including assuring positive care outcomes. They will perform assigned patient care in support of the specialty care services provided to patients within the practice. Incumbents perform duties which are directly related to the physical care of patients in an inpatient and outpatient facility.
