Description
The primary duties of a head coach are to be an effective teacher and role model for our student athletes. The ability to teach fundamental skills of your sport, sportsmanship, safety, strategy, team play, physical and mental fitness and nutrition is paramount for a successful coach to demonstrate daily. Teaching the importance of academics, degree completion and life skills is also key to performing your job well as a head coach. Other tasks as a Head Coach include but are not limited to:
Teach and enforce the “Monarch Expectations” in the student athlete handbook.
Scheduling practices, matches and tournaments within NCAA guidelines.
Establish team guidelines and policies and procedures for enforcement, within Methodist University and NCAA guidelines. Formulate team goals: both short and long-term.
Design and supervise conditioning program for team as NCAA rules permit.
Recommend candidates for and supervise work of assistant coaches if applicable.
Conduct tryouts for selection of varsity and, if needed, sub varsity squads.
Coordinate team travel for the women’s golf team. Supervise and accompany team members on road trips. Request, manage and account for all funds from team travel.
Arrange for systematic purchase, issuance, storage, maintenance care and inventory of equipment and uniforms.
Organize and conduct practices for the women’s golf team.
Adhere to and enforce all Methodist University, USA-South and NCAA rules.
Inform student-athletes of eligibility rules and prepare appropriate eligibility paperwork for the women’s golf team. Take NCAA III Rules test each year and sign off on NCAA III Compliance Forms.
Communicate effectively and professionally with reporters and media members.
Nominate student athletes for post-season awards and prepare letter awards information.
Project budget, submit budget requests, and operate program within designated budget. Select and order team equipment and uniforms with approval of the Director of Athletics.
Recruit women’s golf student athletes within the expectations of the University. Organize and execute recruiting efforts for the program.
Work closely with current student-athletes to enhance retention efforts for the program to include but not limited to, relationship building, team building, academic support, and individual skills and team development.
Attend to the public relations needs of the program-speaking engagements, clinics, interviews, etc.
Attend athletic staff meetings and other appropriate meetings.
Hold required membership in professional associations.
Monitor women’s golf student-athlete academically. Monitor class attendance and academic progress of student athletes in support of our CHAMPS Program.
Supervise student employees within university guidelines.
Maintain, supervise, monitor and oversee specific facilities as needed.
Administer summer camps if you choose to do so.
Maintain a competitive athletic team.
Oversee with approval from the VP for Athletics and VP for Advancement all fundraising activities for the women’s golf team.
Required to be CPR certified each year.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President and Director of Athletics.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required; previous collegiate head coaching and demonstrated experience in the recruitment and retention of student-athletes at the NCAA Division III level preferred. Master’s degree in business or related field preferred.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the potential for collaborative leadership, a high degree of personal initiative, and a commitment to student engagement and belonging.
Candidates must have the ability to relate effectively to current and prospective student-athletes, exhibit strong time management and organizational skills, and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as knowledge of NCAA and USA South Conference rules and regulations.

The ability to teach fundamental skills of your sport, sportsmanship, safety, strategy, team play, physical and mental fitness and nutrition is paramount for a successful coach to demonstrate daily. Teaching the importance of academics, degree completion and life skills is also key to performing your job well as a head coach.
