Description The Welding Centre of Excellence (COE) Welding and Materials Testing Laboratory located at Vancouver Shipyards is a CSA- certified and ISO- accredited facility. The COE lab provides critical support for welding procedure qualification and material verification testing. Since early 2023, it has contributed to key initiatives under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, including welding procedure qualifications for the Polar Icebreaker project. As a Centre of Excellence (COE) Lab Intern, you will support mechanical testing activities related to welding procedures development, assist technical department and production team, and participate in various testing and analysis activities on materials and welding related issues. This internship offers hands-on exposure to weld and material testing in a unique metallurgical testing laboratory, working alongside professional engineers within one of the largest shipbuilding programs in Canada. Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 50 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver. What you'll do Assist in the preparation of various test specimens Support testing activities in the Metallurgical Laboratory Support the COE Lab Quality Management System (LMS) Assist in reviewing and organizing work instructions and procedures Assist with audit processes Work on projects assigned by Welding Engineering and Welding Quality Senior Manager What you'll bring Enrollment in the 2nd or 3rd year of a Metallurgical, Materials, or Mechanical Engineering, or Welding Technology program. A strong curiosity and interest in Project Management/Contracts. Good knowledge of mechanical testing methods for materials and weld coupons. Familiarity with welding processes and national/international welding codes, rules, and standards. Innovative problem-solving skills and the determination to identify root causes and solutions. High integrity and professionalism in all situations. Strong communication, interpersonal and organization skills. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
