Job Summary:
Reporting to the Assistant Editor, the Publishing Intern position will be a key member of Editorial team with introductions to and collaboration with Sales, Marketing and Publicity over the course of the internship. Editorial is responsible for acquiring, editing, and championing the titles on HarperCollins Canada’s list.
Working with the Assistant Editor, the Publishing Intern will see and help with the day-to-day functioning of the Editorial Department. In this role, you will participate in Editorial meetings and learn about the publishing process from acquisition through to publication on a range of different books. You will read submissions, discuss potential acquisitions, write editorial review notes and online copy, and research potential new books. Depending on the candidate’s skills and interests, copyediting, design, and other Production and Art department tasks could also be part of this role. The Publishing Intern will also have the opportunity to learn more about other publishing departments.
Responsibilities
Attend and take minutes at Editorial Meetings
Complete back-up reads on submissions for editors and assist writing editorial reports
Prepare metadata for frontlist and backlist titles
Conduct market research for acquisitions and titles under contract
Craft a cover design brief for a Canadian title
General administrative tasks such as applying for Library and Archives Canada data, updating online metadata, and mailing.
Qualifications
Recent graduate from post-secondary education in a related field
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Acrobat
Publishing Program Certificate is an asset but not required
Keen interest in books, and an understanding of the Canadian market and the HarperCollins Canada list
High level of attention to detail and organizational skills
Strong ability to learn new skills and systems
Strong written and oral communication skills, including copyediting skills
Ability to work well both independently and within a team
Creativity, curiosity and enthusiasm
