Overview POSITION TITLE (Oracle title) COORDINATING TEACHER WORKING TITLE Sheltered Instructional Specialist SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT ESL-Academics LOCATION Crossroads I, Cary, NC PAY GRADE Classroom Teacher (not eligible for national board pay) FLSA STATUS Exempt ELIGIBILITY FOR EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT Yes WORK WEEK SCHEDULE Monday-Friday (occasional evenings and weekends) Position is available for a hybrid telework workweek POSITION PURPOSE: Prepares selected content teachers and ESL teachers at designated middle and high schools to meet the educational needs of multilingual learners in the content classroom. Provides strategic sheltered instruction professional development in conjunction with differentiated instructional coaching aligned with research-based best practices for multilingual learners and the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP®) model. This enables students to access and participate appropriately in sheltered content classrooms. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs) Extensive knowledge of sheltered instruction models (ex: SIOP, GLAD, WIDA Frameworks, Can Do Descriptors, Project LIFT); Extensive knowledge of instructional coaching (ex: mentor training, Cognitive Coaching, Jim Knight); Considerable knowledge of adult-learning theory and techniques; Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams; Google apps; Critical thinking and problem solving skills; Ability to analyze data, communicate trends, and engage in data-driven decision-making; Ability to participate in and facilitate Professional Learning Communities; Ability to design and deliver professional development; Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, students, parents, and the community. EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university in education; Three years of teaching experience in public education; Experience facilitating and providing professional development to adults; Experience working with diverse learners. CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Hold a North Carolina Professional Educator's License in English as a Second Language; Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of NC requirements. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Master's degree in education or related field; Experience with instructional coaching models; Completion of a “train the trainer” sheltered instruction methodology model, preferably SIOP®. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Plans and delivers strategic sheltered instruction professional development aligned with research-based best practices for multilingual learners. Provides on-going, frequent assistance and differentiated coaching for participating teachers after initial training, such as co-teaching, modeling, and providing feedback at regular intervals. Supports Professional Learning Communities to facilitate collaboration among school essential partners to strategically meet the needs of multilingual learners. Assists in forming networks between/among schools to include opportunities for observation of best practices and coordinated professional development. Analyzes and uses data and student achievement results to evaluate program implementation effectiveness as well as make data-based decisions. Establishes and maintains open and timely communication with appropriate groups and individuals at schools and central services. Maintains proper documentation of school and individual support. Stays abreast of current research and best practices regarding multilingual learners. Performs other related duties, as assigned. WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers. The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff and staff members of external agencies, and the community. Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.
