Participant Adjustments and Physical Contact
It is crucial for team coaches to be mindful of the diverse range of physical abilities and limitations among our class participants. While physical adjustments or contact can be valuable for proper form and alignment, it is essential to approach this practice with sensitivity and respect. Some individuals may have unique physical conditions or limitations that require extra care and attention. Therefore, we kindly request that you take the following guidelines into account when offering adjustments:
Consent and Communication : Always seek explicit consent from participants before making any physical adjustments or contact. Create an open line of communication, encouraging participants to voice their preferences and limitations. Respect their boundaries and honor their decisions. Demonstration and Verbal Cues : Consider using demonstration and verbal cues as primary tools for guiding participants through correct form and alignment. This approach ensures that everyone can participate at their own pace and comfort level. Individualized Approach : Understand that each participant has their own unique physical needs and capabilities. Avoid a one-size-fits-all approach and instead, provide personalized suggestions and modifications that cater to their requirements. During Practice Adjustments : Be aware of the context in which adjustments are made. Public adjustments, such as in a team group setting, should be minimal and focused on general form correction and always framed in a positive manner. Additionally, we would like to emphasize the importance of maintaining a professional and unbiased demeanor during practice. Participants may have concerns about favoritism or potential harassment, which can negatively impact the team dynamics and participants' overall experience. Here are a few suggestions to foster a fair and inclusive environment:
Equal Attention : Strive to distribute your attention and support equally among all participants. Be attentive to each person's needs, progress, and questions, ensuring that no one feels overlooked or ignored. Transparency and Objectivity : Be transparent about your decision-making processes, such as choosing individuals for demonstrations or providing feedback. Base your choices on objective criteria, such as effort, technique, or improvement, to minimize any perception of favoritism. Professional Boundaries : Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with all participants, both during practice and outside of it. Avoid engaging in personal conversations or activities that may create the perception of impropriety or bias. By following these guidelines, we can create an environment that is safe, inclusive, and respectful for all participants. Let us continue to prioritize the well-being and individuality of each person, fostering a positive team experience for everyone involved.
