    "ExternalDescriptionStr": "<p style=\"margin-left:0in\"><span>SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This class is responsible for diagnosing mechanical problems and repairing a variety of equipment including trucks, construction vehicles and equipment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing all mechanic repairs/overhauling engines/clutches/brakes/steering/differentials/transmissions and related mechanical units/parts; disassembling motors; repairing/replacing parts/defective wiring for ignition/lighting systems; re- assembling/adjusting/testing repaired equipment; adjusting/realigning brakes; rebuilding alternators/starters; driving/operating vehicles in performing work assignments/responsibilities. Operates under supervision of the Fleet Shop Supervisor, in accordance with establish policies and procedures. Extended hours, call back and on call availability are required. Performs related work as required.</span></p>\n<p>FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures; good knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines; knowledge of repair techniques; knowledge of various types of testing/repair equipment; skill in troubleshooting/correcting defects in motor vehicles/equipment; ability to adapt available tools/parts to specific repair problems; ability to interpret repair manuals/ diagrams; ability to read/understand technical diagrams/sketches of complex equipment; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.</p>\n<p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (either)</p>\n<p>(A) Graduation from an accredited two-year community/technical college, with an associates degree/certification in automotive technology, and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in automotive repair and maintenance, including gasoline and diesel powered equipment; OR</p>\n<p>(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and a minimum of six (6) years of experience as defined in (A) above; OR</p>\n<p>(C) An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above.</p>\n<p>SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Functional Employment Test (FET) required. Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Class A (CDL) Driver’s License.</p>\n<p>PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.</p>\n<p>SAFETY HAZARDS: Inclement weather, fluctuating temperatures, noise, odors, oils, chemicals, vibration, close physical locations and other hazards associated with automotive work.</p>\n<p><span>EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Fleet vehicle, manual/power tools, machinery/welding equipment, communication, and other equipment, as required</span></p>\n<p>PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required in the Public Works Commission’s Safety Manual.</p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:0in\">GRADE 405 $20.95-$27.59/hour</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p><strong>EMPLOYER’S RIGHTS: This job description is general and illustrative of the kind of duties required of this position.
