Internship- Arts Center Stage Management Intern Division: Internship Department : Career, Vocation, and Leadership Experience: Entry-level Job Code: NA Supervisor of Student Employee(s): Stage Manager/Executive Director (The App)/Angela Lockhart (UPIKE) Location: 218 2nd Street | Pikeville, KY Internship Window: 7/1/26 - 8/15/26 Must be a registered UPIKE student. Motivated and detailed-oriented intern to join the Appalachian Center for the Arts team. This internship will provide hands-on experience in production management, allowing intern to apply academic knowledge in a real-world setting. Each year, The App holds 3 performance-based summer camps and one technical theatre-based summer camp, serving over 100 local children, ages 5-18. This year we are adding an adult summer camp for individuals 18+. Intern will assist the production team during the performance-based summer camps. Organization Description: The Appalachian Center for the Arts serves as a vibrant regional arts hub in downtown Pikeville, dedicated to theater, music, and visual arts. It aims to celebrate the area’s rich cultural history while fostering community enrichment through high-quality entertainment and artistic education. Interns will have the opportunity to gain: Hands-on experience in a performing arts work environment. Opportunity to build problem solving and design skills. Opportunities to network with professionals in the performing arts. Nights into how technical theatre operations work and contribute to overall success Internship Duties, Responsibilities, and Career Competencies: Assist the stage manager with all rehearsal prep duties: setting up the space, taping out the ground plan, and other duties as necessary. (C, TW, CSD) Assist stage management in communication between director, actors, designers, tech, and parents/guardians of participants. (C, TW, P, CSD, CTR, L) Maintain and distribute necessary paperwork, including: deck run sheet, costume tracker, entrance/exit plot, and any other relevant paperwork requested by the stage manager. (C, TW, P, T) Attend all production meetings and rehearsals. (C, P) Make sure the stage floor is swept and mopped before every tech rehearsal and performance. (TW, L) Run the deck during the tech rehearsals and performances. This includes managing deck crew, knowing all placement and movement of scenic pieces and props, and keep an accurate run sheet for all crew as well as the production manager and stage manager. (C, TW, P, CSD, CT, CTR, L) Facility Care including preparing rehearsal halls before the start of each day, returning space to neutral, and assuming responsibility for safety and maintenance of building on performance dates. (C, TW, P, CSD, CT, L) Be on site for all performances; respond to emergencies and problems with maturity and intelligence. (C, TW, P, CT) Attend show strike. (C, TW, P) Competencies/Skills: Communication (C), Teamwork (TW), Professionalism (P), Career & Self Development (CSD), Critical Thinking (CT), Community Transformation (CTR), Leadership (L), Technology (T) Qualifications: A current UPIKE student with interest/major/minor in Theatre or relevant field. Experience in working with, teaching, and/or supervising children. Experience and knowledge of theatre and theatre production is helpful Other Skills: Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Good communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Enjoyment in working with children. Strong leadership skills. Detail-oriented and organized. Essential Skills and Professional Expectations: Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Comfortable working both independently and in a team environment. Must be able to manage stress, stay focused, and maintain professionalism in various situations. Weekend work is required. Work Schedule: The App’s performance summer camps run on two week cycles. Camps meet for two weeks on weekdays from 8:30-3:30 and have three weekend performances at the end of each two week cycle. The App’s adult summer camp will meet for a two week period in the evenings with three weekend performances at the end of the two week cycle.   Intern must be available for scheduling during these times. Hours will not exceed 40 hours per week. Physical Demands: General Activity: Sit 1-4 hours/day, stand/walk 1-4 hours/day Use of Hands/Feet: Primarily using hands for typing, operating equipment, or handling materials. Weight Lifted: Up to 50 pounds (with the help of another person) occasionally. Physical Demands: This is a physical job that requires you to be active. Number of Positions: 1 Pay Rate: Beginning at $8.75/hour Location: 218 2nd Street | Pikeville, KY Terms: Upon hire, the intern must register for the Summer II Internship course. To receive course credit, students will complete assignments concurrently with internship work. Students are required to work a total minimum of 80 hours and will eligible for the following credit hours: 80-119 hours of work + course completion = 2 credit hours; 120-159 hours of work + course completion = 3 credit hours; 160-199 hours of work + course completion = 4 credit hours; 200-239 hours of work + course completion = 5 credit hours; 240+ hours of work = 6 credit hours. Summer interns in this position cannot exceed 40 hours of work per week .
