Description
Position Summary:
The 12-month Resident Director (RD) is responsible for the management of Holland Princeton or South Hall. The RD will be involved in the planning of programming, serve in the on-call professional staff rotation, participate in Student Life projects such as Resident Assistant (RA) selection and Housing Lottery, handle low level conduct violations, student orientation, campus programming and collaborate with other campus offices as needed. The 12-month RD will primarily support Leadership and Engagement operations, including summer programming, for incoming students. The RD will report to the Associate Director of Student Life.
This 12-month position requires evening and weekend work. As part of the compensation package, the RD is provided with a furnished on-campus apartment and a campus meal plan.
Major Duties & Responsibilities:
Supervision & Staff Development
Select, train, supervise, and evaluate RAs in the assigned residence hall. Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with RAs to provide support, guidance, and performance feedback. Monitor RA performance to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with Residence Life policies and College objectives. Serve as a resource for RAs regarding programming, student issues, and individual concerns. Foster student leadership and engagement through direct involvement and programmatic support. Residential Operations
Manage operational functions of the assigned residence hall, including key distribution and collection, maintenance requests, damage assessment and billing, and hall openings and closings. Coordinate building and room inspections, as well as internal room changes. Assist with housing assignments, including the housing lottery, first-year placements, and application processes. Serve as the primary liaison between the residence hall and offices such as Physical Plant and Public Safety. Student Support & Community Development
Collaborate with RAs to assess student needs and implement educational, cultural, social, recreational, and service programming. Mediate roommate conflicts and facilitate resolution processes. Provide guidance and referrals to students on personal, academic, and community concerns. Refer students to appropriate campus resources such as Academic Advising, Career Development, Counseling Services, Health Services, Public Safety, and Multicultural Affairs. Crisis & Emergency Response
Serve in a rotating on-call schedule with other Resident Directors, including nights, weekends, holidays, and campus breaks. Support students and staff during emergency situations and campus crises. Additional Duties & Responsibilities:
Serve on College committees as assigned. Maintain regular communication and collaboration with colleagues in the Division of Student Experience to support and advance divisional goals. Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students and staff, regardless of background or identity. Communicate major student and facility concerns to the Associate Director of Student Life in a timely and effective manner. Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of Residence Life and the College. Duties & Responsibilities specific to 12-Month RDs
Assist in the planning and implementation of Resident Assistant (RA) training programs. Support the planning and execution of Orientation Leader training. Contribute to campus-wide programming and office initiatives, including Welcome Week, Fall Family Weekend, Springfest, bus trips, and leadership development events. Assist with summer initiatives designed to reduce summer melt and promote student retention. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Ability to complete complex tasks in a timely manner with minimal supervision. Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities. Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree, required. Prior work experience in a residence life/housing facility at a college or university, required. Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Please note that this posting is not all-inclusive of the job responsibilities or qualifications of the position. The essential functions of the job may or may not have been fully described for purposes of ADA reasonable accommodation. This position is based in Albany, NY. The duties and responsibilities of this particular role require the need for consistent, in-person collaboration and/or interaction with our community, requiring all work to be performed full-time on-site.
This is a 12-month, live-in position. Compensation includes salary, an on-campus apartment, a campus meal plan, and a comprehensive benefits package. The housing and meal plan are considered part of the total compensation package and may be subject to tax.
Additional details pertaining to this position will be discussed during the interview process.
