The Department of Surgery is seeking courtesy surgical assistants. Successful candidates would have primary affiliation with Etobicoke General Hospital and be part of the Etobicoke General assistant on-call roster. There would also be opportunities to assist at Brampton Civic Hospital (both elective and on-call). Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not required. Excellent communication skills and the desire to contribute in a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care are needed. Remuneration is fee-for-service supplemented by an on-call stipend when applicable. Accountabilities: Managing instruments, retracting tissue, suctioning, suturing and cutting sutures Maintains a sterile field and anticipates the surgeon’s needs throughout the procedure Monitors the patient’s status and communicates concerns to the surgical team Operates or assists with specialized surgical equipment as needed Certificate of Registration to practice from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not a requirement Excellent communication skills in English (additional languages are considered an asset as we serve a highly diverse population) Models behaviour that aligns with Osler’s Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation and Collaboration Osler is a primary clinical partner for Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine and is an academic community partner with the University of Toronto’s Temerty Faculty of Medicine and McMaster’s Michael G.
