Description

SURGERY MANAGER Job Description Summary: The Surgery Manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the Surgical Services department to ensure safe, high-quality patient care. Duties include: Leadership & Staff Management: Supervise nursing and support staff, manage scheduling, and ensure compliance with policies and standards. Clinical Oversight: Monitor patient care processes in surgical units, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and regulatory requirements. Resource Management: Coordinate staffing, equipment, and supplies to maintain efficient workflow and cost-effective operations. Quality & Safety: Implement quality improvement initiatives, monitor outcomes, and maintain accreditation standards. Collaboration: Work closely with physicians, anesthesia providers, and other departments to optimize patient experience and operational performance. Education & Development: Support staff education, competency validation, and professional growth. Typical Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:00AM-3:30PM Qualifications: Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN required; MSN preferred). Licensure & Certifications: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Wisconsin. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of clinical experience in Surgical Services. Previous leadership or management experience in a hospital or acute care setting preferred. Skills & Competencies: Strong leadership and team-building skills. Knowledge of regulatory standards (DNV, CMS). Ability to manage budgets, staffing, and scheduling. Excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Proficient in electronic health records and hospital systems. Responsibilities Includes: Operational Leadership: Direct and manage daily operations of Surgical Services, ensuring efficient workflow and compliance with hospital policies and regulatory standards. Staff Supervision: Recruit, train, schedule, and evaluate nursing and support staff; foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment. Clinical Oversight: Monitor patient care delivery in surgical units, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and quality standards. Resource & Budget Management: Oversee allocation of staff, equipment, and supplies; manage departmental budgets and cost-control initiatives. Quality & Safety Initiatives: Implement and monitor quality improvement programs, infection control measures, and patient safety protocols. Interdepartmental Collaboration: Coordinate with physicians, anesthesia providers, and other departments to optimize patient outcomes and operational performance. Education & Compliance: Ensure staff maintain required certifications and competencies; support ongoing education and professional development. Performance Monitoring: Track key performance indicators (KPIs), patient satisfaction scores, and regulatory compliance metrics; develop action plans for improvement. Job-specific duties As evidenced by Finance Management Budget Development Completed by the established deadline. Monitor/Analyze Meets budget targets unless variance has been authorized. Variance Reporting Monthly variance reports completed as required. Staff Development Evaluate Competencies Completion of annual performance review by established deadline. Provide training/educational opportunities Staff completion of training/educational opportunities. Human Resource Management Staffing – retain qualified staff Identify and implement individualized recognition techniques. Interviewing/Hiring Competent Staff Utilize objective, behavioral-based interview questions to interview, evaluate, and hire staff. Orientation Completion of facility and departmental new hire orientation checklists. Evaluation completed annually Annual performance reviews completed by the established deadline. Goal development SMART goals established for staff that support the OMC Strategic Plan. Use performance improvement techniques effectively for low-performing employees Develop, implement, and document performance improvement plan and progress. Succession Planning Identify and begin the development plan for internal staff as appropriate. Leadership Participation in OMC activities Volunteering and encouraging staff members to volunteer at OMC events as evidenced by supporting documentation. Strategic planning involvement at organizational and departmental level Actively participates in the development of the OMC Strategic Plan and departmental goals that support the plan as evidenced by goal documentation. Maintain Emotional Intelligence – ability to perceive and evaluate the emotions of others and effectively manage one’s own emotions. Absence of reported issues/incidences. Have a departmental vision Creation of short and long-term departmental goals that support the Strategic Plan. Display modeled behavior /appearance Maintains a professional demeanor as evident in appearance and behavior. Active participant for interdepartmental cooperation Uses respectful and honest communication with all staff.
