Reports to: Family Team Lead
Hours: Varied [Casual]
Wage Rate: $25/hr + 6% vacation

Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society (CVIMS) is a non-profit settlement organization located in Nanaimo, B.C., Canada. Established in 1979, CVIMS provides support to newcomers and refugees. Services include settlement, employment, family, language and community programs. We are client-driven and committed to being accessible and responsive to, as well as reflective of, our diverse community.
Job Summary:
The Child & Youth Support Worker provides support to newcomer children, youth, and families through childminding services, youth engagement activities, and summer programming. Working closely with the Family team, the Child & Youth Support Worker assists in creating safe, inclusive, and engaging environments where children and youth can learn, build social connections, and participate in community activities. This role supports the delivery of childminding programs, youth-focused workshops and activities while promoting positive development, cultural inclusion, and community integration for newcomer families.
Key Responsibilities:
Childminding Support
Support the delivery of developmentally appropriate programming for newcomer children aged 12 months to 5 years.
Provide safe, inclusive, and nurturing childminding services that support children’s social, emotional and developmental wellbeing.
Develop friendly and supportive relationships with CVIMS teams, children and families.
Observe and share relevant information regarding children’s participation, wellbeing, and developmental needs with supervising staff.
Assist with playroom setup, organization, and cleanup of the facility as needed.
Supervise children during indoor and outdoor activities, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
Maintain attendance records and follow agency procedures regarding incidents, accidents, and reporting requirements.
Foster positive relationships with children and families from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Settlement Workers in Schools ( SWIS) Program Support
Assist the SWIS team with planning and facilitating children and youth activities, workshops, camps and community-based events.
Support child and youth participants in developing social connections, leadership skills, confidence, and community engagement.
Act as a positive role model while encouraging participation and inclusion.
Assist outreach efforts to engage newcomer children, youth and families in CVIMS programs and services.
Support off site educational, recreational, cultural, and community-based excursions and activities.
Ensure participant safety and wellbeing during programming and field trips.
Assist with participant registration, attendance tracking, and program evaluations.
Support the creation of welcoming environments that promote belonging, inclusion, and cultural exchange.
Administration & Team Support
Responsible for actively communicating with team regarding availability.
Maintain accurate program documentation, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with organizational policies and privacy legislation.
Assist with preparing program materials and resources.
Ensure strict adherence to confidentiality, code of ethics and all other professional codes of conduct.
Work collaboratively as part of the CVIMS team to ensure agency and client success.
Follow CVIMS protocols for reporting and communication.
When available, participate in staff meetings, training sessions and professional development opportunities.
And such further duties and responsibilities as may be communicated by CVIMS from time to time.
Required Education, Certifications, and Experience:
1-2 years post-secondary education in children & youth care, early childhood education, or related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Experience working with children and/or youth in educational, recreational, community, settlement, or volunteer settings.
Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with a proven ability to build trust and rapport across diverse populations. Excellent spoken and written English required.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and integrity.
Training or demonstrated proficiency using client databases, Microsoft Office 365, Zoom, Teams, and other digital tools
Vulnerable sector criminal record check on file with CVIMS required.
Responsible Adult Certification is required.
First Aid Level 1 required with CPR-C
Preferred Skills, Abilities, and Assets:
Valid class 5 driver’s license and access to reliable transportation is an asset. Moved from required.
Experience working with newcomer, refugee, or multicultural communities.
Knowledge of community resources available to children, youth, and families in Nanaimo.
Positive, energetic, and youth-centered approach.
Training in trauma-informed care or experience working with vulnerable populations.
GBA+ certification is an asset.
Fluency in a second language would be an asset.
Priority will be given to applicants who are eligible to work in Canada for minimum 3 years.
Accountable individual who adheres to agency policies and procedures.
Attitudes and values in keeping with the CVIMS vision and goals.
Additional Information:
Travel within Nanaimo Regional District and surrounding region will be required. Occasional travel to locations in other parts of British Columbia and/or Canada for purposes like professional development, networking, program delivery or conferences may also be required
Some work outside of regular office hours, including evenings and weekends, will be required. Flex time schedules will be made to accommodate non-regular work hours. This position is eligible for overtime in accordance with the BC Employment Standards Act. All overtime must be approved in advance.
This is a casual position with a varied schedule based on organizational needs.
