Description

Paul, Weiss is seeking a Client Engagement Attorney to join its Professional Responsibility Department in New York. This role is integral to the firm’s client intake and engagement process and serves as a key point of contact on outside counsel guidelines and engagement terms. The Client Engagement Attorney will lead the review, negotiation, and interpretation of outside counsel guidelines and related client engagement documentation (e.g., engagement letters and matter-specific terms, master engagement agreements, panel agreements), while collaborating with various departments across the firm, including, as needed, pricing/billing, information security, conflicts, and practice teams, to ensure alignment between client expectations and firm policies. This role requires strong judgment, clear communication, and the ability to manage multiple matters efficiently while fostering collaborative relationships with internal teams and clients. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney who enjoys a client-facing, cross-functional role at the intersection of legal risk management, client service, and firm operations. Duties and Responsibilities: Coordinate the review of outside counsel guidelines and related engagement documentation by multiple departments within the firm. Identify and track issues across common guideline categories, including billing/rates, staffing and supervision, budgets and transparency, confidentiality and information security, incident reporting obligations, vendor and third-party controls, conflicts/waivers, work product and IP terms, and technology provisions (including AI). Assemble and synthesize internal feedback for delivery to partners and clients, including distinguishing between action items requiring proposed language and FYI items for awareness. Analyze client terms and provide practical and strategic guidance to partners on the firm’s ability to comply, including any recommended revisions or addenda consistent with firm policy. Communicate directly with clients regarding requests for clarification or revisions, as needed, and negotiate mutually acceptable language. Develop expertise in the firm’s approach and policies related to client engagement terms and advise stakeholders accordingly. Monitor the status of pending outside counsel guidelines and take responsibility for moving guidelines through the review and negotiation process to completion. Maintain an application to track the status of outside counsel guideline negotiations and a database of finalized guidelines.
