TCEQ Geoscientists will support initiatives in the Office of Waste (Superfund, remediation, radioactive materials, or underground wells) and Office of Water (groundwater or surface water). This role will conduct or oversee geological, geochemical, geohydrological, and geophysical field studies and surveys; gather samples; and analyze and interpret information to support sustainable water resource management and regulatory efforts.

Hiring supervisors in the Austin Central Office, or any of TCEQ’s sixteen regional offices, may request candidates with specific geology experience and work location preferences from the Geoscientist hiring pool. You may be connected to all open positions that match your experience. The hiring supervisor schedules interviews and makes a final selection.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Licensed as a Geoscientist by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG).
OR
Five years of full-time geoscientist experience and must be licensed as a Geoscientist by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG) or obtain licensure within twelve (12) months of hire date.
Geoscientist II*
Licensed as a Geoscientist by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG) plus two years of full-time geoscientist experience beyond licensure.
OR
Seven years of full-time geoscientist experience and must obtain Geoscientist licensure within twelve (12) months of hire date by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG).
Career Ladder Progression
Two years of full-time TCEQ experience as a Geoscientist I
Geoscientist III*
Licensed as a Geoscientist by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG) plus four years of full-time geoscientific experience beyond licensure.
OR
Nine years of full-time geoscientist experience and must obtain Geoscientist licensure within twelve (12) months of hire date by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG).
Career Ladder Progression
Two years of full-time TCEQ experience as a Geoscientist II.
Geoscientist IV*
Licensed as a Geoscientist by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG) plus five years of full-time geological experience beyond licensure.
OR
Ten years of full-time geoscientist experience and must obtain Geoscientist licensure within twelve (12) months of hire date by the Texas Board of Professional Geoscientists (TBPG).
*A graduate degree in a geoscience discipline may substitute for one year of the required experience, with a maximum of two years substitution allowed.
Employees in this classification series may research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure, including but not limited to a communication infrastructure system, cybersecurity system, electric grid, hazardous waste treatment system, or water treatment facility. See Tex. Business & Commerce Code Section 117.001(2). Accordingly, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure is a requirement to be hired for and to continue to be employed with TCEQ.

The service must be a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or acceptable to the Texas State Board of Education Certification. A photocopy of the evaluation must be included with the job submission in order for it to be considered complete.
